Find out more about Sao Paulo

Rio may have the beaches, but São Paulo—Brazil's biggest city—is the true heart of the Brazilian nation. A colorful mix of high culture, tropical parks and vibrant street life, this melting pot of 20 million people is one of the most diverse cities in Latin America. In 'Sampa'—as the Paulistanos call their much-loved city—you're just as likely to be dining on Japanese noodles or fine Italian cuisine, as on the Brazilian delights in the city's innumerable restaurants.

Things to see in São Paulo

In a city as vast and bustling as São Paulo, it can be difficult to know where to begin. A good starting point is the centrally-located Mosteiro São Bento, one of the oldest churches in the Americas. Founded in 1598, its neo-Gothic facade hides fabulous gilded interiors and stained-glass windows. Almost as venerated is the Pinacoteca, probably the most important art museum in Brazil. Among its paintings and sculptures is a mammoth collection of bold Brazilian art. Just opposite is the Museum of Arte Sacra of São Paulo, with fine examples of sacred artifacts. For a breath of fresh air, head to Ibirapuera Park, in the center of town. With its lakes, fountains and cycle paths, this is where Paulistanos come to unwind. Or for a spot of adventure within sight of the city center, try exploring the caves and forests of the Serra da Cantareira—emphasizing just what a city of contrasts Sampa really is.
