What to do in Atlanta

Atlanta Hotels

Atlanta is the sprawling, glitzy capital city of the US state of Georgia. Blanketed with leafy trees and public green space, but stippled by flashy sky scrapers, Atlanta’s cityscape provides the perfect urban backdrop to explore its historical sights and thriving arts scene. From elegant arts galleries and national historic sites to old-world theaters and music festivals, Atlanta’s cultural core will keep you entertained for days. Splurging shoppers will be satisfied too, as Atlanta boasts a mix of upscale malls and niche boutiques.

Things to see

Culture-fiends should start their sun-washed Atlanta morning by exploring the city’s top museums. Begin at the High Museum of Art in Midtown. The High, based in a bright white modern building, has over 14,000 works in its permanent collection, ranging from classic European masterpieces to American art-pioneers, like John Singer Sergeant. After, experience the city’s history, and visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, where you can take a guided tour of King’s old-fashioned boyhood home. For some classic Atlanta fun, spend an afternoon at the Georgia Aquarium - perfect for families - and marvel at its majestic whale-sharks and manta rays as they glide through immense water tanks. After, sports-fans can catch a game at the mighty Turner Field Baseball Park, while appreciators of nature amble around the idyllic flower-flecked grounds of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, in the city’s spacious Piedmont Park.

If you want to immerse yourself in the city’s cultural hub, stay in Midtown. This chilled-out area combines oases of green-space with museums and landmarks - such as the iconic 1920s Fox Theatre. Midtown is ideal for foodies and shoppers too - grab a plate of fried chicken and cheese grits at a family-owned café, before heading to the Midtown Mile, a stretch of trendy boutiques. For an up-and-coming hip hangout, try East Atlanta, and enjoy the laid-back student vibe.
