Memphis Hotels

Memphis is a sprawling, rocking city set in the southwestern corner of Tennessee, along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. This grand city - cut through by retro trolley cars and speared with glitzy high-rises - is hailed by many as the birthplace of Blues music, and takes that heritage into its electrifying, neon-washed nightlife. Memphis takes its high culture seriously, boasting many fine art galleries and stately museums - but there’s plenty of easy-going family-fun to be had, too.

Things to see

Wake up to the fresh Tennessee sunlight and head out to The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. This enormous, smooth-curved Beaux-Arts building provides a serene oasis in the city’s energetic heart, showcasing stellar works that range from the Italian Renaissance to 20th century greats. Afterwards, immerse yourself in some typical Tennessee history at Graceland, just outside the center. Graceland is the opulent mansion that belonged to Elvis Presley, and today stands as a period museum dedicated to his life and work. See Elvis’ black baby grand piano, tour the quirky Jungle Room, and marvel at the hall of gold records. For a fun family afternoon, visit the Memphis Zoo, where kids will go ga-ga for the awesome African lions and cuddly Panda bears. Music-lovers, meanwhile, can’t afford to miss Beale Street Historic District, an old-world nightlife paradise, where the Blues is said to have been born.

You’ll enjoy pristine indoor pools, airy guestrooms, and laid-back restaurants and bar lounges, which provide the perfect place to unwind after a long Memphis day. For the urban adventurer traveling on a budget, check out the many 2-star hotels in Memphis, which provide free hearty breakfasts and complimentary in-room WiFi. But the hotels in Memphis aren’t without their Southern luxuriance - the lavish, upscale 4-star hotels provide full spa services and fine restaurant dining.

Where to stay

Stay in Downtown Memphis to be in the bluesy heart of the city. Late-night club-goers and live music fanatics can spend their time exploring the neon-lit clubs of Beale Street, while trendy types and indulgent shoppers hang-out at historic South Main, Downtown’s arts and shopping district. Hip city explorers and cool culture-fiends will love the student-vibe of Midtown, where 2 universities compliment the galleries, museums, and independent stores. For those traveling with younger kids, the gardens, nature centers, and enormous green parks of East Memphis - like Shelby Farms Park - make for a perfect family setting.

How to get to Memphis

The nearest airport to the city is Memphis International, based only 11 miles from Downtown. While it serves a number of direct domestic flights - from places like Chicago, New York, and Dallas/Fort Worth - its international flights are few and far between. If traveling from overseas, you’ll likely catch a connecting flight at Chicago. From the airport, either hire your own car and race the 20 minutes to Downtown, or hop in a taxi from outside Terminal B. There are also public buses from Terminal C. In Memphis, driving is the easiest and quickest way to get around, but you can see Midtown and Downtown via the retro trolley car.
