Most popular areas in Anaheim for 2-star hotels

You don't have to fork out loads for a chance to see the Mighty Ducks hit their hockey pucks or to meet Mickey Mouse beneath the spires of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. That's because the city of Anaheim is home to countless 2-star hotel choices that shouldn't break the bank. Many are right next to the iconic Disneyland theme park, dotting bustling S Harbor Boulevard. There are plenty more fringing E Katella Avenue, huddled between the coffee shops and the swaying palm trees. And then there are the 2-star choices near the interchange with Orangewood, which are great if you're heading to the Convention Center.

Loop-de-looping rides and scream-inducing water slides converge on the Best Host Inn on the far western edges of Anaheim. The simple, clean accommodation is a great place to be if you want to hit Knott's Berry Farm and wave-splashing Knott's Soak City – there's even a free shuttle bus to the entrances. Free wireless internet and a pool space ringed with deckchairs awaits at the Stanford Inn & Suites Anaheim, a short walk from the Anaheim Convention Center. And then there's the family-ready Eden Roc Inn & Suites, with its compact pool and in-room TVs.

Where to find the best restaurants in Anaheim

Foodies won't want to miss the eclectic menu of eateries housed in the Anaheim Packing House. Where there was once an old orange depot, there's now a multi-story matrix of taste-bud-tingling street-food outlets. You'll smell the aromas of Indian samosas and peppery IPA beer brews as you wander the elegant Spanish Revival building. Families heading into Disneyland will have oodles to choose from – find tangy southern chicken wings and juice bars laden with luscious fruits lurking between the rides and castle spires. For a taste of the Middle East – tahini-laden hummus, sizzling kebabs – head to the interchange of Brookhurst and Ball.

You'll find the Bowers Museum is a great place to balance out all the cartoon fun and whizzing rides of Disneyland. There's reduced entry for kids and groups, which means families should be able to see the thought-provoking American canvases and the intriguing Polynesian folk relics for less. The other low-cost draws of Anaheim are largely outdoors. Make for the Yorba Regional Park for biking paths, volleyball courts, and playgrounds. Or, head a little deeper into the Californian wilds with a trip to the Oak Canyon Nature Center. It's got sage forests, scrub hills, and a small natural history exhibit.

Best ways to get around Anaheim

Anaheim is the 2nd largest city in Orange County, which means you're unlikely to be able to walk around, unless you're looking for a hotel right next to Disneyland and only want to visit that iconic resort. For heading further afield, you can make use of the ART bus network. It runs circuits around the Resort District and the Convention Center, connecting the main sites for just a couple of dollars per ride. A rental car can also be affordable, what with so many hire outlets competing for custom. You'll just need to make sure your hotel comes with a parking space provided.
