Find out more about Bangkok

Bangkok is where many people get their first taste of Thailand, whether for a stopover or a longer stay. Today’s modern metropolis is unrecognizable from the small settlement on the Chao Phraya River that became the historic capital of Siam, yet you’ll find plenty of heritage behind the gleaming high-rises. Explore the glorious temples and shrines by day, then get ready to explore the city by night—its world-class culture, sumptuous cuisine, and vibrant nightlife provide all the ingredients you need for a delightful vacation in Bangkok.

Things to see in Bangkok

Delve into the past at the Bangkok National Museum, which contains fascinating collections of Thai art and artifacts. The museum was opened in 1874 by King Rama V and is housed in a former royal palace. Admire precious ceramics, carved ivory figures, historic musical instruments, and weaponry, then view the famous murals depicting the life of Buddha in the palace chapel. Continue the royal theme with a visit to the Royal Barges National Museum—these lavishly decorated ceremonial barges are still in use for special occasions. Bangkok is known for its markets, so head for the pier and hop on a boat to Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa floating markets for a bit of good-natured haggling and plenty of photo opportunities. The night markets are also great places to experience typical Thai culture and sample some of its famous street food—Patpong market in the city center is one of the most popular.

Four-star hotels in Bangkok

The city is well served by hotels in all price ranges, and you’ll typically get a lot for your money in this highly competitive marketplace. Most four-star hotels in Bangkok strike a happy medium in terms of comfort and facilities that won’t break the bank. You can expect to find free WiFi, fitness rooms, and in-house restaurants in many of the city’s 4-star hotels, while some of the newer ones include luxuries such as swimming pools, spas, and rooftop terraces. For a more traditional take on Bangkok accommodation, check out the city’s historic districts to find family mansions and villas imaginatively converted into boutique hotels.

Where to stay in Bangkok

When it comes to 4-star hotels in Bangkok, you can find a diverse range in Chinatown, which offers a choice of charming historic hostelries, cool warehouse conversions, or stylish high-rises. This atmospheric neighborhood is close to the city’s famous temples and the Grand Palace, as well as Hua Lamphong railway station. The old city of Rattanakosin has some sleek new 4-star hotels along the riverside—ask for a room with a balcony for memorable views of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. Centrally situated Ploenchit is ideally situated for easy access to the shiny new shopping malls, and many popular international hotel chains can be found here.

How to get to Bangkok

Most international flights arrive at Suvarnabhumi, the city’s main airport and the principal gateway to Thailand. The Airport Rail Link (ARL) runs to Phaya Thai or Makkasan station, where it connects with the MRT metro. The old international airport, Don Mueang, is now used primarily for domestic flights as well as a few low-cost carriers. Getting around this bustling city can require a little patience, especially at rush hour—the Skytrain rapid transport system is a quick and convenient option. To explore at a gentler pace, hop on a water bus and see Bangkok through a local’s eyes.
