What's Austria Like?

There's no shortage of fascinating landmarks in Austria, and Vienna alone has a more than ample share of architectural wonders. These include the Schönbrunn Palace, a magnificent 1,441 room building which has lots to see including the world's oldest zoo. The Vienna State Opera is an imposing structure and one of the most world-renowned opera houses. Outside of the city, why not get the best view of that glorious scenery by heading up the mountains along the Glossglockner High Alpine. Staying in the Alps, Seefeld is one of the most well-appointed ski resorts in the world and has twice hosted the Winter Olympics. There are slopes for all levels of proficiency, and of course plenty of Austria hotels you can book with us. The Tiergarten Schönbrunn offers something for the young and the young at heart, with an astounding collection of different kinds of wildlife and sealife. Hohensalzburg Castle is one of the best preserved castles in Europe and overlooks Salzburg from its haughty perch atop a mountain peak while Melk Abbey is just one of the extraordinary buildings to be seen in lower Austria.

Tips for Getting Along with Locals in Austria

Austria has its own particular rules of etiquette; it's good to familiarize yourself with these before you go so you can get along with the residents. When meeting new people, a firm handshake and eye contact is preferred. It's polite to learn some German, but use the formal "sie" for "you" instead of "du". Austrians are punctual to a fault and it's considered rude to be late without a sincere apology. Dress code is fairly relaxed, but make sure you're well covered in churches. You'll have to try some of Austria's famous cuisine - tafelspitz (beef), wiener schnitzel (veal escalope) and apfelstrudel. Many Austrian hotels have restaurants that serve such delicacies. After skiing, it's a pleasure to meet and mingle with your fellow revelers at the après-ski and enjoy a warming beverage such as jagertee featuring rum, wine, brandy, tea, or even orange juice. Remember that booking your Austrian hotels is easiest with Hotels.com!
