Shopping in Winchester - High Fashion and Hidden Treasure

Hotel search

Winchester's affluent local population and popularity with day-trippers makes for a thriving retail scene. There are a large number of independent stores stocking distinctive gifts, sophisticated clothing, and classic goods, from antiquarian books to vintage homewares. All the big British chains are here, too, in case you need to stock up on essentials. Most of the shopping is within a few blocks of the cathedral, but nearby villages offer treasures, too.

The Square

Residents and visitors alike converge on The Square, home to some of Winchester's most welcoming cafés (many with outdoor seating) as well as several charming and popular stores. The Hambledon stocks men's and women's clothing, primarily by British designers, along with a range of homewares, books, and trinkets that are perfect for gift-giving. At Cadogan, an eclectic selection of men's and women's fashion is spread across 4 levels. The shop is a magnet for wealthy locals and for celebrities visiting the area (actor Colin Firth has popped in several times.)

Inner-city markets

Winchester has embraced outdoor living in recent years, with an ever-growing number of cultural events and markets being held in the open air. The most impressive alfresco shopping experience is the Winchester farmers market on the second and final Sunday of each month. With close to 100 stalls, it is considered the biggest market of its kind in the U.K. Another highlight is the antiques and collectibles market on the first Sunday of each month. Like many of Hampshire's markets, it is organized by a group called Southern Market Traders.

Parchment Street

This low-key shopping strip, just off the High Street, is where you'll find some of Winchester's most tempting - and priciest - independent boutiques. At Justice, you'll discover jewelry from some of Britain's most revered designers, with an emphasis on exotic styles and unusual materials. Nearby, at Bell Fine Art, you can peruse original paintings and limited-edition prints by local artists, as well as sculpture, ceramics, glassware, and jewelry. Drop in to the delicatessen for European delicacies or check out the lingerie store if you're feeling sultry.

Alresford

Just east of Winchester is the picturesque and unusually fashionable village of Alresford. There, Moda Rosa stocks elegant womenswear from upscale designers like Versace alongside accessories by Swarovski, Valentino, and others. Nearby, Hêtre offers a range of women's shoes, from petite high heels to Ugg boots. Both stores mark up their items considerably, but if you have the time and money, a trip to Alresford for lunch and shopping can be therapeutic indeed.
