Local Produce, Weekly Markets, and Family Businesses - Shopping in Jersey

Hotel search

Jersey's towns and villages are home to markets, shops, and workshops selling local produce and arts and crafts. Many shoppers head to the island for VAT-free shopping, but it’s worth bearing in mind that there's still a Jersey sales tax of 5 percent added to purchases. Browse the specialty shops, and be sure to visit at least one of Jersey's lively public markets.

St. Helier

The pedestrianized center of town makes it a haven for shoppers. It’s easy to jump between well-known British chains and local boutiques. The Central Market takes place weekly in a cast-iron Victorian market hall and specializes in meats, vegetables, and fruits, along with baked goods and local Jersey treats. Fishermen’s catches go on sale right around the corner at the Beresford Fish Market.

St. Brelade

St. Brelade is Jersey’s busiest beach resort - a great place to stop off for local trinkets and souvenirs. You can pick up a one-of-a-kind gift from Fish ‘n’ Beads, a small seafront workshop selling jewelry made from driftwood, sea glass, and other beach finds. The Farm & Craft Market in St. Aubin showcases fresh local produce, as well as arts and crafts handmade by islanders.

St. Ouen

The parish of St. Ouen is the farthest from St. Helier and therefore considered the most traditional. Independent retailers based here far outnumber chain stores. There are lots of charity shops stocked with donated items to rummage through, including a large warehouse-style store operated by Jersey Hospice Care. For a completely different experience, stop by Jersey Pearl's handsome showroom, brimming with exquisite pearl earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets.

St. Peter

St. Peter is another great parish for small, local shops and family-run businesses. The Classic Farm Shop is an independent butcher, dairy, and farm shop, which also sells locally caught fish. The yogurt, cheese, and ice cream, made from the milk of the owner's Jersey cows, are particular favorites. Dunell’s, another family business, has been supplying the island with a fine range of wines, spirits, beers, and liqueurs for around 114 years.
