    I didn't want to stay at a generic chain resort that lacked personality and 'The Mansion' did not disapoint. The place has 25 rooms so it is quiet but opulent. The gardens and facilities are immaculate and superbly decorated with fantastic food, serene pools and gorgeous rooms. The spa was a bit expensive but well worth the price. The staff are so lovely, personable and helpful. (For fantastic tours ask for their driver, Gusty who went above and beyond the call of duty.) It wasn't absolutely perfect but that is the trade off for staying at a place that is truly Balinese. If it were seaside, I could have spent my entire holiday happily at 'The Mansion'.

Location. The Mansion Resort Hotel & Spa is located in the Penestanan artists' community in the foothills of Bali. Surrounded by rain forest, the hotel is one kilometer from Ubud and the Central Market and two kilometers from the Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

Hotel Features. A brick driveway flanked by landscaped pools and statuary leads to the peaked-roof portico of The Mansion Resort Hotel & Spa and its gleaming chandelier. The hotel grounds feature lotus ponds and fountains. Heaven & Earth Spa offers a variety of Indonesian healing treatments and massage and spiritually-oriented wellness programs. The hotel's extensive art collection of paintings, statuary and other media is evident everywhere. The collection of both traditional and contemporary art can be found in public areas, restaurants and guestrooms. Arriving guests are treated to complimentary 15-minute massages. Recreation amenities include an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a play area and yoga and aerobics classes. Indochine, one of the hotel's two restaurants, serves a combination of Vietnamese and French nouvelle cuisine. Café La Terrace is a casual restaurant that serves Asian and international cuisine in an airy conservatory. Complimentary breakfasts are offered daily. Smoking is permitted only in designated areas. Pets are not permitted in the hotel.

Guestrooms. The hotel's 21 guestrooms are located in 10 buildings (no elevator) located throughout the property. Rooms offer varying Balinese décor, original artwork and four-poster beds. Many rooms include patios with garden views. Rooms provide complimentary high- speed wired, wireless, and dial-up Internet access, satellite television service and DVD players. Rooms also include laundry facilities.

Expert Tip. Ubud's Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a sacred forest with 115 species of trees, many of which are used in Balinese spiritual practices. The forest also includes temples, stone pathways and, of course, monkeys. The forest is inhabited by four troops of about 340 long-tailed macaques.
