Expert Tip. Between the second and fifth centuries, hundreds of thousands of Christians were buried in multi-level catacombs outside the gates of Rome. After the contents were re-interred in the city's churches in the ninth century, the catacombs were forgotten for an entire millennium. Daily tours provide a fascinating glimpse into early Christian history.
