Location. One of the newest cities in the world, Brasilia was inaugurated in 1960 to replace Rio de Janeiro as Brazil's capital. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2.2 million inhabitants reside in Brasilia, mainly in the outer lying suburbs rather than in the famously designed city center by Brazilian architect Lúcio Costa.
