    Estancia is gorgeous and the rooms are nice, but it promises more for the money than it delivers. Rooms are slightly small for its class, and the "patios" offered in the upgraded rooms are about 4 feet square. They also hide a lot of fees that they absolutely fail to warn you about. I got what I thought was a great deal on Hotels.com but ended up paying half again more than the reservation price in egregious valet parking fees (there is no option NOT to valet park) and "Hospitality Service Fees" - when I didn't even have them clean the room or replace towels for the two days I was there.

    The Good: Lovely common area ambience with conscientious bar and restaurant wait staff. The Bad: According to the wait staff, the property restaurants all share the same kitchen. So, there is a VERY long wait for food delivery. And if Estancia is hosting one or more weddings--and Estancia appears to host a lot of weddings--it is now a VERY VERY long wait for food delivery. The Ugly: Room description -- "Balcony or patio with view of garden or landscaped courtyard." Sounds lovely. Let's stay there! Actual room received -- (a) No "balcony." We were assigned a room on the ground floor that had no (!) outside barriers between the rooms. So, anyone walking by (which was always the risk) could stop and look into our room. (b) "Patio with view of garden or landscaped courtyard" -- Our patio consisted of two small rows of paving bricks. No outside seating. And, the view? A wall. A giant, tall, imposing wall that completely obscured everything—including the sky. So, even if you were remotely interested in hauling a chair outside to balance precariously on the paving bricks, you would view a wall. In fairness, we don't leave negative reviews unless we give the restaurant, hotel, etc., the opportunity to correct the problem. So, quickly realizing that we absolutely did not want to be confined to this prison cell/claustrophic room horror, we requested a room change. The Really Ugly: Curt response to our request for a room change, "that is the room you get."

Location. Opened in 2004, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a former thoroughbred equestrian estate located in La Jolla, Calif. The University of California, San Diego, stands one block from this property. Famed Torrey Pines Golf Course offers championship play one-and-one-half mile away.

Hotel Features. Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa was selected in 2006 by Condé Nast Traveler as "One Of The World's Best Places to Stay." Surrounded by 10 acres of native California flora, this property displays ranch-style ambience reminiscent of southern California's Spanish heritage. Adobe El Restaurante blends locally grown spices and produce to create distinctive rancho-style cuisine. The Bodega Wine Bar offers wine tastings hosted by the Chef de Libations. A business center houses three computer stations. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel. The property includes 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space. The hotel partners with Torrey Pines Golf Course to offer clinics and golfing opportunities with the pros. An outdoor splash pool features a seasonal bar, and a health club offers cardiovascular and strength-training equipment. Eucalyptus, lavender and citrus plants border a path leading to The Spa at Estancia. Treatments and activities include the Sunrise Yoga Class, signature massages and scrubs and night swims. The hotel hosts organized children's and adults' activities, and offers a Camp and Craft program.

Guestrooms. This three-story hotel offers 199 guestrooms and 11 suites. Many rooms extend onto garden- or courtyard-view balconies or patios. Accommodations include complimentary high-speed wired and wireless Internet access, laptop-compatible in-room safes, and MP3 adaptors. Beds are dressed with 350-thread count sheets, down comforters and equestrian-style blankets. Bathrooms feature marble vanities, makeup mirrors and Estancia toiletries.

Expert Tip. Fans of flamenco guitar gather on weekends at the hotel's Mustangs & Burros bar to listen to Rumba Flamenco performances. Gypsy King-style music and signature margaritas such as the "Mighty Mustango" create colorful evenings of entertainment.
