Hotel Vertigo - formerly York Hotel

We stayed for 5 days 4 nights at Vertigo and the newly renovated room that we were given was real nice. The decor was modern but with a spec of retro look to it. The room has no AC but in November, we just opened the window and turned on the ceiling fan and we were nice and cool. The bed was comfortable, my fiance' stated that she finally slept well in a hotel room and the restroom had all new fixtures. The room was clean and though the walls were thin and could here people shower, we did not experience any noise that week. The staff were friendly and the location was spectacular. It is near the cable cars, buses and walking distnace from alot of restaurants, bars and union square...not to mention delicious Tommy's Joint..There is a pizza place next door that is real good and inexpensive and a liquor store for your beverage and snack options. For breakfast, we highly recommend Han's Coffee Shop on the corner, about 3-4 doors down from the hotel..its a lil hole in the wall and from the exterior might look shabby and unwelcoming, but we tried it and let me tell you, it was some of the best breakfast we have had and we are breakfast people..We love breakfast and Han's was great and cheap, huge tasty homemade-like omeletes and the coffee nice and hot. Across the street is Cup of Joe and they have great coffee also and tasty pastries, free Wi-FI, but he hotel also has free Wi-Fi...We highly recommend this hotel if you are on a budget as we know that San Francisco can be expensive. They are still going through renovation, but it is not of any inconvinience to the guests, just make sure you book a newly renovated room. I could tell you what the other rooms look like, I can only speak of the renovated rooms. The location, though seeming kinda of shabby and "hood" like, is really not, it is real safe and we had no issues. san Francisco has alot of transients and hobos, but for the most part they leave you alone once you have expressed that you are not interested in being cha

if you're looking for a stand out unique place to stay, then this is the place for you. definitely go for one of the newly remodeled rooms. the design is very 50s deco. we loved the color scheme and design. the staff was very friendly and helpful. the only bad thing is the fee for parking. you do get 24 hour access to your vehicle though. the hotel is only a few blocks from union square and just a short walk to the cable cars, bus stops and muni.
