A little down at the ears

The air conditioning refurbishment is STILL going on! The bathroom fixtures are getting tired, the entire hotel feels a bit "down in the dumps". I love the location. I don't like the overall comfort. The hotel needs more than a face lift.

They're Trying, But...

...they're not quite there. I'll start off by saying that the service was top notch and everyone was really nice. But it's clear they are trying to fix up a place that... needs serious repairs, to put it lightly. My AC unit leaked all over the carpet and created a huge vein of water inside the wall when I left it on for more than 20 minutes. The door lock card readers were also terrible. I had my key card changed more than once and it always took me 5-10 tries to open my door. They are currently putting in central AC and I hope my unit wasn't a newer one. The rates for the business center usage were ridiculous - I laughed out loud. The minibar was also absurd, even for a minibar. Plus the internet isn't free either. The bed was fantastic though. And the restaurant was nice... have a drink in their cool lounge. But you can do a lot better in the immediate vicinity.

NOISY!

Even though the bed and linens were outstanding we slept horribly. This is without a doubt the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed in and not just in Chicago. The closed windows let in every sound, the walls are so thin we could hear people hanging things in the closets, the actual sliding and hanging of the hangers. It was just awful!

The Whitehall is clean but it is not a 4-star hotel

This is a 3-star hotel at best. As on my stay, 8/31/09, it was undergoing renovations. It is an older property and the rooms and furnishings are ready for upgrading. Location is great and convenient but compared to the other 4-star options in the area, this property falls short.

They put the screws to me.

Booked a king room for my girlfriend and I. Showed up and they had "upgraded" me to a double queen room. Yay, sleeping on a bed smaller than the one at home with 1 more person. Woke up to a hammer drill next door. TV did not work properly, so we weren't able to rent movies. And, the man at the front desk told us that the valet parking was $25 a day when we arrived. When we checked out I was charged $45 a day. What really bothered me is that if would have known it was $45 I would have used the parking garage across the street for $10 a day less. I ended up paying $145 for parking and internet. The location of the hotel was the only thing that I like about it. From now on, I'd forgo the location convenience for a more comfortable room and cheaper parking.

Construction noise

The hotel was undergoing construction during our stay. We were told this at the time of arrival. What we weren't told was that the construction was going on in the adjoining room! It is absolutely ridiculous to put people in a room with construction going on next door.

Over-rated

The hallway smelled of smoke. The room was so small you had to turn sideways to get between the end of the bed and the cabinet housing the TV. The room did not look anything like the room in the website picture. There are no coffee pots in the room and calls to room service went unanswered. They claim that Fortune Magazine named the Whitehall one of the eight great small hotels in America. That must have been in another era. This hotel is completely overrated and over-priced.

Needs work

The hotel is a bit seedy and well past its prime. The staff is willing and most are friendly but not well trained. The hotel's systems are antiquated. The bed is nice, with good linens and a comfortable mattress but the rest of the room is old and tired. The coffee was not good.

It's nice...but...

I didn't dislike staying here. It was fine, except there was no overnight security! Someone followed me up to my room and pretended to be room service. I slammed the door in his face, and then he proceeded to CALL my room. I called the front desk, and they didn't even send anyone up. I was disappointed, and pretty freaked out being a young, single professional on a business trip alone. The hotel was comfortable, the service was great otherwise. The internet was a little shoddy, which isn't convenient when one has work to do. I guess I'd stay there again, but I'm hesitant.

"Tired and worn out room"

According to the write up, the hotel was recently refurbished. Unfortunately, we were given a room that was not. We were unable to change rooms because the hotel was sold out. If you decide to stay at The Whitehall make sure you specifically ask for a refurbished room.

Fair hotel

No coffee maker in room. Difficult to find stations for TV viewing. Problems with telephone in room. Only one small bar of soap for entire bathroom. small room for such a large bed.

Terrible customer service

The employees at this hotel are rude and unaccomodating. They placed a letter on my desk upon arrival stating that they would only be doing construction on this hotel between 9am and 5pm, which would be strictly enforced. I was awakened by drilling and hammering in the room next door to me at 8:00am. I wouldn't reccomend this hotel to anyone.

Not Satisfied

We did not enjoy our stay in this hotel. They did not come to clean our room on the second day.Whereas I had called them and asked them to clean the room , but to no avail. Then they allotted us the corner room with a wall facing the room. When we requested them to change the room, they asked us to pay $100 more.
