Hotel Adagio, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel

Good room for the money.

If you don't mind a very small hotel room and bath, then you won't be disappointed. The exterior of the building boasts a beautiful facade, and the lobby/bar area is quite lovely and welcoming. The architectural details of the hotel do not disappoint. The location vis a vis Union Square and shopping is very convenitent. Hotel staff is terrific. That said, I would recommend it; but most likely would not stay in this area again unless business reasons demanded it.

Needs improvement

Although the lobby of the hotel is modern and nicely done, the rooms are in need of renovation. The bedroom itself was small, but not bad; however, the bathrooms are pretty barebones and the towels are too worn, frayed, and some had holes. I don't really care about these kinds of things too much, but I was mostly UNimpressed with the service. I tried to get a glass of milk in the early evening (I'm pregnant) and after a long delay they delivered heavy cream to my room, saying that's all they had (despite the fact that milk is on the breakfast menu as a beverage). In addition, the hotel also offers the service of pre-ordering breakfast the night before, at a designated time. This is great for business travel when you have early morning meetings and want to get ready while you wait for breakfast. Unfortunately, the food was late and not that good at all, once it came. Overpriced as well. So, overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Just the night before I stayed at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, which is also part of the same chain. That hotel was nicer than this one.

Needs Improvement

The price, location, and friendliness of staff were great, BUT....... the pictures on Hotels.com for this hotel were NOT AT ALL what the room actually looked like. The coffee maker was dirty, the bed was uncomfortable, the bathroom smelled moldy, the bed comfort was so,so, and our in room movie system didn't work.

A Dodgy Hotel - Adagio

Threadbare, needs to be referbished. Cleanliness is not an extremely high priorety here. I guess the definition of boutique hotel they use here equals small hotel. Think of an older urbanized Motel 6. Great central location

Great inside, not so great outside

It's a fantastic hotel with gorgeous decor. Once you walk in the lobby it's very impressive. The only complaint I have is the moment you walk outside there could be a bum or seedy character passing by or hanging out. It's only about 5 block from Union Sq. and in the daytime it's no big deal. But if you take a cab, make sure to be dropped off in front of the hotel and not the corner. Not the hotel's fault though. If it were a better location, It would have 5 stars in my book!

Other hotels are so much better....

Parking: if you don't arrange your $20/day parking at the time of the hotel.com reservation, the Adagio will charge $39/day. (Instead, use the $20/day enclosed lot next door to the hotel.) Key cards: the keys cards were continually becoming demagnetized, no matter how careful we were with them. We needed new cards 4 times within three days; once the card was ruined just in the time it took to go up the elevator to the room. Staff advice: We were told it would take 10 minutes to get to the Orpheum theater, which is impossible driving, much less walking. We were lucky that we didn't believe the desk clerk. Coffee: at checkin, we were told that coffee is served in the mornings at the restaurant in the lobby. That usually implied gratis; however, it was $3 per cup. On Sunday, the restaurant wasn't open at 7:45AM, and the desk clerk sent me a deli across the street that was also closed. Needlesstosay, the desk staff cannot apparently be trusted with any advice. Room storage: no dresser, but an 8-foot desk. Summary: the room was very nice, large and comfortable, but the service and the room key made the stay ridiculous.

Very Disappointed

We were very disappointed with the hotel and our stay. We upgraded to an executive suite on a higher floor and were expecting a higher quality room. Overall the room was comfortable, but very worn. The furniture, wall hangings and carpet were all worn. The photo in the wall hanging was peeling out of the frame. The sofa had worn spots. The grout in the shower was moldy-the exhaust fan did not work. We asked to have it repaired, but it was never done. We stayed five days. You'd think they could have repaired it during that time frame. The front desk staff were not helpful or courteous. We waited several minutes during checkin before any of the three staff even greeted us. On check out the same attitude prevailed. The restaurant was very good and the staff in both the restaurant and bar were outstanding. The towels were old and scratchy. No free coffee (even discount chain hotels have free in room coffee)! Overall the web was misleading in how the room would look and what our experience would be.

Not a great Hotel for the money

The most important thing I didn't like was about maintenance. For a pricy hotel like this you'd be expecting more crispy towels and sheets rather than those worn (but bleached) towels. The room was small and the portable air-conditioning unit!! was taking good amount of space with it’s ugly duct. The cleaning crow were noisy and inconsiderate, they were slamming the doors and talking loud in hallways, and because of the old structure of the building each time we felt like an earth quack shock.

Noisy Neighbors

The staff was wonderful, the room was comfortable but nothing special compared to others in that price-range. It was the street noise that was difficult to sleep through. It wasn't the typical city sounds of sirens, etc.. but the party crowed at the numerous local bars. The patrons were loud, especially at closing time. I wouldn't go back,I cherish my sleep.

Needs Improvement

Although the location is great. We had several small issues that affected the quality of our stay...sink would not drain, heater would not work properly, safe was out of order. Additionally, there was trash from a previous tenant under our bed.
