Not worth a 4 star!

After reading previous reviews, I had mixed feelings, and ended up being unpleasantly disappointed. The TV wasn't working. I called the front desk 3 times, and each time they said they would send someone to fix it. No one ever showed up. The minibar wouldn't open...even after they told me to push the buttons on the side. The view was terrible, but it's NYC, so I can live with that. The hotel advertises bath robes, and there were barely enough towels, let alone robes. I asked to be moved to another room and was told there was no other room in the entire hotel. The concierge is only open during the day, even on a holiday weekend. I complained to the manger at checkout and all she did was to thank me for letting her know. The best thing about the hotel was the view from the rooftop terrace and the friendly front desk staff. Not worth the 4th star by any means.

What a RIPOFF!

For the rate I paid and the previous reviews I expected this to be a pretty nice hotel...it was not. Once I got into my room I noticed the TV did not work. I called the front desk to inform them and they said "yes we know the TV doesn't work in that room sorry...and we are totally booked so we have no other rooms" Fine, I can live without TV...but the room was very hot so went to turn on the air...that didn't work either nor did the wall mount hair drier. When I called down about the air I was told to open a window. This place is just a bad hotel in a pretty good location.

Service needs improvement

The reception desk leaves much to be desired. No matter what I asked, staff was rude or simply just ignored my questions. They cover for each other very well. It seems that the customer gets in the way, is always wrong, must be endured, and is nothing but a inconvenience. Aside from that everything else about the hotel is great. However, since hotel costs have declined and availability has increased - I will definately consider other hotels in the future.

Room was great, bathroom could use a lot of work.

My husband and I were visiting NY from DC for the weekend only. We chose to stay the weekend so we could catch a Yankee/Mets game (Yankees won the series) without worrying about traffic. First off, the location of this hotel was amazing. Just off of Broadway near Central Park, Lincoln Center, Natural History Museum, great dining and shopping. The hotel had a very quiet balcony for everyones use, though there werent many up there when we visited. The staff was friendly upon checking in and out, but because of the type of hotel there wasnt much interaction with them. The room was decent sized for NY, beds were extremely comfortable. The hotel does have concierge service and parking, but thats it. Do not expect to be able to order in the night or morning, or at all. This hotel is simply for spending the night in and enjoy the city. The bathroom was the only draw back for me. Compared to the bedroom, the bathroom reminded me of a cheaper end hotel. The fixtures were modern styled, but the tiling was stained and old, both on the floor and ceiling. It seemed as if it hadnt been cleaned well in a while as there was a thick layer of dust on some of the items. The shower had a dried up layer of hair and the handle didnt work. I would expect some of these things with a chain, but not a more sophisticated hotel. Overall, Im guessing it may just be the room I received. I think their website and photos didnt match the room I was in. I will not stay here again. For the price I paid, there are several other hotels in the area of similar costs.

Oops

Not enough water pressure in my shower to wash my hair. I assume it will be fixed since I reported the problem -- but really! They also forgot to stock shampoo.

Disappointed

Great location, convenient to subway, shopping and sites. However, we were very disappointed to learn the TV service was being updated with limited channel selection - and they charge for internet connection!! The room was small with dust on furniture and the coffee maker was dirty. For the price we paid, this is un-acceptable.

welfare hotel on the avenue

We paid for an upgrade to superior room. The room we got was tiny and facing a wall. There was a very smelly and poorly groomed resident in the elevator, making us think that some of the rooms were rented to homeless through a specialized New York City program. The room was very shabby and not particularly clean, but, funny enough, had a flat screen TV.

Small Rooms. Charged extra for minibar even though I didn't use it.

The location is good, but the rooms are really small. I booked my trip through hotels.com, but when I checked my credit card bill, I saw that the hotel charged me extra $25. When I called them, they told me that I used the minibar (even though I did not). After some convincing, they agreed not to charge me. So if you are planning to stay in this hotel, make sure that they do not charge you extra for something that you didnot use.

The good and the bad...

Ordinarily I do not review hotels online but I'm hoping this review helps other people and the On the Ave Hotel in NYC. So I arrived well after check-in time on a Sunday and my hotel room was not yet ready. I had reserved a penthouse loft (after getting a great deal), by the way. They told me to come back in a half an hour because people were late to check out of my room. So I came back in 45 minutes. No room yet. It was still being cleaned. Finally, about 2 hours after check-in time, my room was ready. When I got upstairs, I immediately kicked my shoes off and found that the entire carpet was wet...I can only think that maybe it needed to be cleaned just before I arrived. So, this was only a small thing but a little annoying as I like to take off my shoes. I'd also like to note that there were no tissues (and none delivered after 2 calls), no local information at all (not even a phone book), and the furniture was pretty beat up. The bed was really cozy so I called down for room service...and found that they discontinued room service and the woman at the front desk even went so far as to tell me that the restaurant in the hotel would not prepare a meal for take out. Fine. I asked if they could suggest a place and she couldn't think of anything. Then I asked for a few local menus and after waiting quite a while, I was brought three menus from take out delis across the street. Now, without a phone book (I was told they didn't have any phone books)it was kind of difficult to find a decent meal. I ended up ordering from Nicks and it was fine. Not exactly what I had had in mind, but it was good food at a good price. Overall, I'd say that my experience really fell very short of my expectations, which was a bummer, as I don't get to do this type of thing much. I'm certain I'd never stay here again and would not recommend On the Ave to friends.

"Needs Improvement"

I stayed in this hotel on Valentines Day and it was the worst experience i have every had at a hotel. I came back to a dirty room after requesting service and towels. This hotel is terrible i would suggest someone goes to another hotel.
