rooms not to my standards

The Hotel itself and the surrounds was very nice and beautiful, but the room we got was not up to my standards. Everything was so old. My room didn't even have a coffee maker for morning coffee... We were in the Diamond Head Tower. It needs serious updating. Everything was so compact. The towels had a dingy smell to it. I had to call down for some fresh towels. It was a lot more busy and crowded. Not very relaxing or accessible to the facilities.

Just an okay hotel

The hotel and surroundings were well maintained and decourous. However, the food at the restaurants on site was just okay and way overpriced. Also, a lot of Japanese tourists. I felt like I was in another country. The hotel seemed to cater to them rather than the "usual tourist".

Specifically for families. Rooms need updating

Overall, friendly staff. Very nice that it is so large. However, we had a room in the Rainbow Tower, ocean front/ocean view. Room was not cheap, and there was still moldy tile in the bathroom. Felt very much like a Best Western in the room. Towels were rough. Things were in somewhat of disrepair. Not what the picture shows. And we were on the 30th floor ocean front. That should be just about the best they have. Makes you wonder. Great for families with little kids. If your kids are older, which mine are, they will get bored staying here and prefer to venture out, which is a bit of jaunt anywhere you go. A nicer hotel farther up the beach would be better.

Nickel and Dimed

The hotel is huge and nice but super "corporate". Had to open my wallet at every turn. And it was even the price it was just that they get you for everything. Example: For the courtesy of printing my boarding pass for the next day flight - $7.00. Huh? Seriously. I don't mind paying for a vacation, but it was kind of tacky that they charge for EVERYTHING. Why not just include it in the room rate? There are better places to stay in Waikiki.

Could be cheaper...

It's a neat 'village' setting with a bunch of on-site high end shops, boutiques and restaurants, but unfortunately the prices are way too inflated in said shops and restaurants. However, it is really easy to walk or take a bus anywhere in downtown Waikiki. The lobby is gorgeous and surprising (exotic animals like penguins, flamingos, macaws & koi fish!) and the staff is pretty courteous and helpful. The beachfront was beautiful, even if we did hear the constant drilling and clanging of hotel construction. There's even a pretty, albeit completely unnecessary man-made lake/lagoon. My biggest gripe --other than the inflated price-- is no free wi-fi.

Follow up on Previous Review...

I had given a review about our stay in Oahu for a night on the way to the 'Big Island'. On our way in we were not given the King we paid for six months earlier. We were stuck with two doubles and the bathroom was filthy. On our return back out the assistant manager did follow up on her promise and gave us an upgrade to a corner suite overlooking the ocean on one side and the city on the other. The room was fabulous. Wish we had more time to enjoy it. Only a few drawbacks for the whole thing. The internet was not working (after an hour of fiddling around we figured the ethernet cable was shot. We called the front desk and they tried trouble shooting but said they could'nt get up there until morning. It would of been nice to have a connection. I wanted to print out our boarding passes for the next day). The next morning I went to the business center to check in on line and print them out. It cost me over $8.00. There is a 50c a minute charge to use there computer (for a minimum for 15 minutes) then a 50c charge for page printed out. Also, I requested a late checkout and were only given til' 12 noon even though I pleaded for an extra hour they were adament. Later I found out that the couple we were traveling with got a check out for 1 pm no problem. Her husband had called. Also, when you order room service everything has a 17$ gratuity attached (they pre-tip themselves) plus a $6.00 delivery charge. Which is okay but when you get room service or do something for you they always have their hands out even though they know this. I am sure many people end up giving them a 30% tip or more not even thinking about it when all is said and done. This place can really nickel and dime you to death. Don't get me wrong it's gorgeous but, it is a business. I did however let the assistant manager know how much we appreciated being upgraded this time to a nice room. She appreciated that.

Overcrowded

If you want to stay in the hustle and bustle of Waikiki this is the place for you. Everything you need is "onsite" however, it is easy to be forgotten and overlooked. There is pressure during your stay to visit a "time share" presentation. I am a diabetic, during the middle of the night I called the front desk for a juice vending machine because my blood sugar was rocky and I had run out of juice. They said there were no vending machines, the sundry shop was closed and that if I needed juice my husband had to walk a few blocks to the nearest store. Mind you, there are multiple restaurants in the village, I was highly disappointed that they were unable to provide a medical necessity on hand due to "procedure".

Liked it/hated it

If you like to stay at your hotel and do everything within that spot...This is your hotel...Everything of course was expensive there. Daily parking fee is ridiculous considering lack of parking and room prices. You have to leave the hotel to find good deals. Hotel is great for families. We are personally very non traditional tourists. We spent most of our time in our jeep touring the north shore, local restaurants, flea markets and local underground shops. Beautiful hotel, just not for us...Really only slept there.

Worst Place Ever

I hate this place. The room was not worth the money. The partial ocean view means you have to look over the balcony and turn your head to see the ocean. The food is extremely expensive and it's not worth it. I will never come here again. Spend your money else where. The bathrooms are small and no room at all. I have stayed at better Hilton hotels and other hotels that are not as expensive. GO SOME WHERE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

too crowded

The hotel lobby and pool, shopping etc- all beautiful. That being said, were not happy with the pool at all. We never even swam for more than a few minutes because it is so over crowded. I asked the towel guy how we go about getting a chair and he told me to come back in the Fall. Not the answer I wanted to hear. With small kids it sure would have been nice to have been able to use the pool. To use the beach with a chair, you have to rent them- that is a bit pricey with a family of 4. It was too $$ of a hotel to have this kind of situation. The lagoon was nasty, beach too crowded and the pool was much too crowded. The room was clean, but nothing extra special about it. It was a dream vacation for our family and our first trip to Hawaii, but we were very unhappy with our stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and we would not recommend it to anyone.

Needs Improvement

I did not realize that the Diamond Head Tower was as old and in need of renovation. Otherwise, I would have chosen a different hotel. Also, I would have preferred to be closer to the main shopping area which was about 1/2 to 3/4 miles away. Also, bathrooms were very small, rooms were in need of renovation. Ocean view was fine. We would not stay at this hotel again.

Beware if booking for convention or large conference

I had great expectations for this hotel stay as I have had great experiences at other Hilton Hotels. I booked the hotel for a conference. I stood in line to check-in for over one hour. In fact, all weekend long, there were often long lines for the restaurants and again at check-out. The hotel's response was, "I'm sorry...we have a conference in town." I was surprised by this response. They are a very large hotel, near a convention center. It would appear that they are marketing themselves for conferences and large groups. Certainly, this was not the first conference they have had staying at their hotel. Efficiency and management response must be re-evaluated.

NOT AS GOOD AS EXPECTED

THE DIAMOND HEAD TOWER MUST BE ONE OF THE OLDER BUILDINGS BECAUSE THE ROOM FURNISHINGS WERE KINDA OLD. TABLE WAS SHAKY, ICE MACHINE ON MY FLOOR WAS BROKEN, BUT ONLY HAD TO GO T THE NEXT FLOOR. LIKED THE HILTON PRINCE KUHIO ROOM BETTER, MORE UP TO DATE.
