Get ready, this is a long review, but worth your time. You've found a terrific place to stay! The El Primero is wonderful. Owners Pie and Sol are attentive, friendly, but not pushy. I stayed there for seven nights and left feeling like part of their family. The breakfasts are bountiful. Each morning a buffet is prepared with a wide selection of delicious, fresh fruits; sausage (link and patty), bacon and mini-quiches; bagels, English muffins, toaster waffles and fresh banana nut bread; several types of dry cereals; delicious coffee and tea. Needless to say, I gained a few pounds while I was there! Adjacent to the breakfast area is a large courtyard with lots of trees and plants. It's hidden from street view by large panels of obscured glass, so there's lots of privacy. There are sofas and comfortable chairs in the courtyard for reading or relaxing in the sun. Our room was clean and well-appointed. A very nice selection of welcoming items was placed on our desk...nice little touches that make it feel even more like they care about their guests. Our room, the Cardiff by the Sea, was a bit on the small side for two people. They do have other rooms with King beds that were larger, and Pie offered to move us to one, but we were fine with what we had. If a huge room isn't that important to you, you'll be fine with the Cardiff. There are 20 rooms in total, all with names relating to the surrounding area. The hallways are lined with historic photos of these places, and it's a treat just to look at those! Our room had its own bathroom, phone, and television. The air conditioner worked very well and kept the San Diego humidity at bay. The carpet was clean, as were the bed linens and comforter. The blanket on the bed was made of the softest material I've ever felt. The bed was comfortable, not quite a pillowtop, but considerably better than that found in most other B&Bs. The room was quiet, even though the hotel is situated on a fairly busy street. There were not a lot o

We booked this room because we wanted to stay near the Cricket Amphitheater but not too close where the traffic to the event would drive us nuts. So we decided to stay at El Primero because we love old architecture and we had read the previous reviews on this hotel. It was all true. The owners of the hotel serve the breakfast in the morning and they are such warm people, they really get to know their guests. They make you feel at home. We will definitely love to return to this hotel for another little romantic get away. My only word of warning to you is that the beds are a little squeaky and the walls are a little thin, so we won't book the room closest to the lobby next time! ;)

We were very happy with our accomodations at El Primero. Only wish that our card key would have opened the front door, ringing the bell and calling the manager seemed awkward.

Trip Type: Romance Review 7 of 26A wonderful hotel for the money!
After looking at several hotels on hotels.com we decided to try the bed and breakfast category which led us to the El Primero Boutique Bed and Breakfast. We stayed three nights and were very pleased with the clean, updated rooms and friendly inn keepers--Pie and Sol. The breakfasts were also great: fresh bananna bread, assorted fresh fruits, juice, coffee. We were also very pleased with how easy it was to get to places: San Diego, beaches, La Jolla, were all just a short drive on the freeway. There are also several restaurants close by. All in all, our stay was wonderful and we look forward to returning!

Far exceeded our expectations. Met wonderful people at breakfast - a real breakfast - not stale danish and kiddie cereal. The owner was fascinating to talk with and he and his wife have done a remarkable job restoring this fine old hotel. The bed was probably the most comfortable one I have ever slept in at a hotel. Would definitely return to this hotel and am recommending to everyone.

Trip Type: Romance Review 10 of 26Great Hotel!!!
We were reluctant to stay at El Primero when planning our vacation to San Diego because the hotel is not in the city. Staying here is worth the 15 minute drive into San Diego! The hotel is spotless. The facility has a history but is modern and updated. Breakfast is delicious and includes items for everyone. Pie, the owner, goes out of his way to make sure his guests are welcome and comfortable. The hotel's energy is generated using solar power if you are concerned with being an Earth friendly traveler. The staff takes many other steps to ensure El Primero is a green hotel. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We had a wonderful experience at El Primero and would highly suggest it to anyone looking for a hotel in the San Diego!

Trip Type: Business Review 11 of 26Wonderful, Personable Experience
I had a wonderful time at El Primero. What really sets it apart is the friendly owners who really make an effort to make you feel comfortable and welcome. The rooms were small but very clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The breakfast they offer has a wide range of options. It is a great option in the area for a unique personal experience unlike the comparably priced hotel chains.

If you need a place to stay in San Diego, you can't go wrong with the El Primero Hotel. The good price, central location, and the warm hospitality of the staff is what makes this place stand out. The breakfast was excellent and the room is clean and bright. The Hotel also maintains the highest "green" standards as well. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone considering visiting the San Diego area.

El Primero is one of the best places to stay in San Diego. The staff is friendly and very welcoming. The hotel is beautiful, comfortable and clean. The owners have proudly recorded the history of El Primero and share it with their patrons. It goes to show they level of care and pride they have for not only the hotel but also the community. They are knowledgeable of things to do in the San Diego area and made great recommendations. Every time I'm in San Diego, I will stay at the El Primero.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 15 of 26nice,cozy hotel.
As soon as we stepped into the lobby we were greeted with smiling faces. Everyone was really nice and eager to help. The room was small, but very comfortable. The bathroom was nice and clean. Since this is a bed and breakfast, breakfast came free and was better than I thought it would be. They had pastry and oatmeal choices. Coffee and orange juice, and pretty much all you need for breakfast. Well worth the money, and we are planning to stay there again.
