Trip Type: Family Review 1 of 4Amenities should include ear plugs for certain rooms
Our room overlooked the outdoor bar and 'music'. Fortunately, I had ear plugs with me; hence, at least the hotel should provide ear plugs if they put you in a noisy room (music till midnight, I am told, i.e. the ear plugs worked)

Trip Type: Family Review 2 of 4A nice hotel with service issues and a party-like location
This is apparently san jose's first luxury hotel, built in 1901. It has been redone into a "Luxury-like" boutique hotel. The hotel itself is very nice. The room (once they got us into the correct one) was spacious and very clean! The decor is nice, not great. Pros - In downtown San Jose, 45 minute drive from San Francisco, 10 minutes from Santa Clara. Cons- In Downtown San Jose, which is a big party city on the weekend. The hotel's restaurant becomes a nightclub on the weekend and it was very hard to sleep with the music playing till 2 am. As well as the loud cars blasting music etc. Adara (sp?) at the front desk (there is no concierge)was the nicest person we encountered and was very helpful. The other guys, especialy (Anthony) were very bothered when spoken to. They are in the wrong industry obviously as they have the personality of linoleum! It is a nice hotel, probably more suited for the business traveler.

Trip Type: Family Review 4 of 4Easy to enjoy
This is a fine example of the way to renew an old building. The interior is euro-modern, the exterior is 19th Century classic. There were some quirks. The halls were unheated -- in December, even in San Jose, we found everything would have been improved with better heating. Our room had both a wonderful walk-in shower AND and old-fashioned (60s style) tub and shower. One or the other would have been OK. If a tub was desired, a luxury tub (deep, no shower) would have made much more sense to me. Both worked, however. It took me a day to find the coffee machine (hidden with the pay-for-food). Service was friendly and quick. Internet service was FREE. I was on-line immediately. Two chairs for reading (his and hers) would have made life perfect.
