Trip Type: Not Provided Review 1 of 4Great Room, great location
Great location in Kyoto near two subway stops and in walking distance to many attractions. Hotel is new, clean and very spacious for a single room in Japan, with full sized tub and good shower. Card key access to floor and room. Would definitely stay here again.

Trip Type: Not Provided Review 2 of 4Kyoto, we're going back!!!
Based on the hotels.com reviews, we booked our stay at the Hotel Monterey. The hotel was every bit as wonderful as described and more. Since public transportation is paramount to our vacations (we would never attempt driving in Japan), the location couldn't have been better, just one and a half blocks from the subway station Karasuma-Oike, and close to a city bus stop. The hotel was an easy walk to the Nashiki Market-a must see for visitors and the covered Teramachi shopping arcade. Also in the neighborhood are countless local restaurants, two convenience stores and even a Starbucks. The hotel cleaning staff paid attention to the smallest of details and care for personal items left out in the room. The front desk staff were extremely courteous and helpful and spoke enough English to take care of our every need. We also enjoyed the free pajamas in the room that were laundered nightly and returned. The bathroom had a huge soaking tub, with shower head that could be moved to three different levels and a heated toilet seat! We would definately stay here agaiin and in furture trips to Japan look for a Monterey Hotel in other cities.

Trip Type: Not Provided Review 3 of 4Excellent Service and location
This hotel has a European flair in decorations and motifs and is located centrally in downtown Kyoto. We originally wanted to get a hotel near the Kyoto train station (we arrived from Tokyo via the Shinkansen bullet train), but we came to Kyoto during the Cherry Blossom season and all major hotels near the Kyoto Train Station were booked. So we took the advice of fellow travelers and booked this hotel. It turned out to be a great decision. This hotel is centrally located to all major tourist attractions - most of which are walkable from this hotel. From the Kyoto Train Station, take the Karasuma subway line north 3 stops to Karasuma Oike Station. Get out at exit #6. Make a right, walk about 2 blocks past the book store and the Starbucks and arrive at the hotel. Service is excellent and rooms are very clean and comfortable - although a bit small by Western standards. The heated toilet seats are kinda nice, but the TV channels are limited as is Video on Demand, but we came to Kyoto not to sit in the hotel room. The hotel is located in the downtown business district and we didn't find too many restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Those on a tight budget can head over to Starbucks or the (one of a kind) Lawsons for a quick bite. We simply walked over to the Teramachi shopping arcade where plenty of restaurants and shops can be found. For a quick bite for those on the go, we found the Gourmet City grocery store to be great. We weren't very fond of having to turn in our hotel key to the front desk every time we left the room, but after we saw the size/weight of the key chain, this was no longer an issue. Overall, nice European style hotel in an excellent central location with easy access to the subway.

Trip Type: Rest and Recreation Review 4 of 4Treated like Royalty
The Hotel Monterey Kyoto has to be one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. The staff were exceedingly polite and efficient, even in spite of the fact that it was a very busy national holiday and all of Japan was visiting Kyoto to see the maple leaves change. The hotel staff graciously offered to securely store my baggage both prior to check-in and after check-out, and even took care to indicate they would be extra careful with my laptop computer. The room was spacious (by Japan standards) and very nice - luxurious even. The bed was comfortable, and the room was tastefully decorated. All the usual amenities were included, and there was even fresh loose-leaf green tea and a cute tea-set in the room. The hotel's location two blocks south of a subway station made getting to/from the hotel and the main Kyoto station for sightseeing very simple and economical.
