Trip Type: Business Review 1 of 12Smelly place
I do like to stay here. The rooms are large with kitchenettes. The hotel is full most of the time. The real issue for me was the smell of food from every corner of the hotels. Even throughout the halls and elevator. The hotel is older and rooms, though spacious, are older and not undated. The carpets are old and worn, along with the overall room. The rooms are spacious and the hotel inexpensive. Since the hotel always seems booked getting to and from your room can take sometime. The staff is friendly but not always staffed enough to meet the needs of the customers. Then there was the 5am wake up call I did not request..... Overall if you are looking for an inexpensive, spacious place to stay with a kitchenette it is great. Especially if you do not mind the smell of food throughout and the noise level in the rooms from a packed hotel.

Trip Type: Business Review 3 of 12Excellent Hotel
As long as you don't mind dated furnishings, The Five is a great hotel. The staff are friendly and service oriented, pricing is good value and location works for me.

Trip Type: Business Review 4 of 12Great Workout Facility and Serivce, Everything Else Needs Work
I stayed at this hotel a number of weeks recently for work and finally had to check out and head to another Calgary hotel. The workout facility is top-notch for a hotel: only 1 treadmill, 1 bike, and 1 elliptical, but has everything else imaginable including free weights, medicine balls, punching bag, etc. The service I experienced was also great with the staff doing everything possible and in reasonably quick time to ensure my satisfaction. Unfortunately, the building is old and there is only 1 temperature throughout all rooms - the in-room thermostats don't control any temperature. The wireless internet was spotty in the evenings, and the wired internet connections in most rooms are near the bed or in the kitchen, but nowhere near the in-room desk. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel other than the fitness center and the price.

Trip Type: Business Review 5 of 12Outstanding Hotel
This hotel is an older building, however, other than that, it is conveniently located, well priced, clean, friendly and helpful staff. It had new linens and pillows, plenty of hot water and water pressure. Coffee replaced everyday.

Trip Type: Business Review 6 of 12Decent value for the money
The location was ideal and the suite they set me up with was very roomy. The suite had a small kitchen which worked well considering how expensive the city is. The gym was adequate (free weights and machines) and the free internet service reliable. The breakfast was really expensive although the location is close to some moderately priced breakfast joints. All the more established hotels in that area are pricey thus this one was reasonable in relation.

Trip Type: Business Review 10 of 12Excellent location....great value
The room I had was an excellent value, especially consider the location (downtown) and time of year (Stampede). You are easy walking distance to downtown shopping and light rail. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room I had was very spacious and had a full kitchen which was especially handy given the length of my stay. The room furnishings are a bit outdated, so if you want something high scale, this is not the place for you. If you don't mind something that is a bit older (and clean) then I highly recommend Five Calgary Downtown Suites!!

Trip Type: Business Review 11 of 12Good location, but needs a facelift
This hotel has a lot to recommend it including spacious rooms and a great location at a very good price. The staff is friendly and helpful and the restaurant/bar is acceptable. What it badly needs, however, is a "facelift." The rooms need to be made over, the beds replaced, the elevators upgraded, and the carpets replaced. I understand that such work is planned for later this year after the tourist season is over.

Trip Type: Business Review 12 of 12Old Hotel
There's a reason this hotel hasn't been reviewed yet, and I hope it's because everyone else has avoided it. The 3 star rating is not deserved, and I'd be hard pressed to give it 1 star. The 5 Calgary Downtown is a tired hotel in desparate need of a facelift. The rooms are decorated circa 1970, and the three elevators are tiny (you could fit three people with luggage - four without). The elevators are slow too, so plan for plenty of time getting to and from the lobby.
