Good hotel, incompetent staff

We stayed for 2 nights. The staff for the first day was excellent and very helpful. The next day (our departure day) the new staff was horrible - with people waiting to check out he was chatting leisurely with a customer about where to visit, where to park his car in his visit to a nearby park, etc, and bringing up new suggestions as to where that client could go for a fun day. I could not wait any longer and threw the keys on the dest and left. Please check whom you hire!

Had a great time

This hotel was pleasant, clean and quiet. I enjoyed the non-smoking building. The pool was clean nice and large. I would go back again if I were in the area.

Reasonable value & convenient Universal Studios Shuttle

We spent three nights at Sportsman's Lodge in mid-July. Hotels.com saved us about 20% vs direct with hotel. The place is a bit long in the tooth but our room was clean, the bed was comfortable and fairly quiet (noise from poolside entertainment past the posted 9pm limit was somewhat annoying). We picked the place primarily because it was a bargain relative to competition offering Universal Studios shuttles. The Shuttle service was great, but last ride back picked up at 7:30; 9 would have been nice. We had 2 day Universal passes and were TIRED, so used room service: Good food, reasonably priced and arrived within 20 minutes. Every employee of Sportsman's was friendly & helpful...can't say that for many hotels!

Convenient but quiet location

An older "landmark" in the Studio City area of L.A., The Sportsman's Lodge was a great place to stay. Friendly staff, great room with a view of the huge pool through the trees. Quiet and comfortable.

Really good value for the money-even with the paid parking

Got a really good deal at Hotel.com. Room was nice. Good bedding. Could use an update on the towels. As others have said walls are thin and you can hear people in other rooms and outside noise more than in more modern buildings, but luckily hotel did not seem over full. Didn't get a chance to use the pool but it was extremely nice. Staff were nice and responsive. Only thing that could have been better was cafe/room service. Tried both and service was fairly slow. Food was decent and was lower than average price for room service. Average for cafe. Would stay here again.

I like this hotel but...

The room was great. The bed was very comfortable. The food at the cafe was good. I had only two complaints. The water in the swimming pool was too warm. The Friday night concert at the pool went on until 11:00 a.m. No one within range of the concert had the option to opt out -- it was loud, some of it didn't resemble music, and a funny place to hold a concert -- where people go to rest.

Love this eccentric hotel!

The Sportsmen's Lodge is right down the street from my son's apartment and when we decided to visit him we needed a place to stay. I looked at numerous other hotels in the area, but reviews were scary. When I found the Sportsmen's Lodge, I knew I'd found a keeper. Sure enough, it's incredibly convenient (near the freeway on Ventura Blvd., and adjacent to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and other wonderful little diners and food places) and is much like a sprawling resort. It felt like entering another realm. It's simply a great place for any purpose!

great location

Nice clean hotel. Easy access to everywhere we wanted to go. Would go back to hotel again.

Not as bad as the negative reviews say it is

We got a corner room with a small patio area. I've never stayed in a lower level room with a sliding door the faced the parking lot and was a little nervous about it but the sliding door had two durable locks. The pool was the best part of the lodge, and it had a bar right next to it. The staff was very friendly. We were very satisfied with our stay and would definitely come back.

Perfect if you need to be in this neighborhood

I was going to a graduation at Harvard-Westlake, which is just up the block. This hotel is within walking distance. It is an interesting, funky and unusual place - not a luxury hotel, or a boutique, but fun and quirky. It is a throwback to L.A. in the Sixties, and had some excellent and unexpected live music by the pool on Friday night, and a DJ spinning at the pool on Saturday. All in all a good value and a lot of fun if you need to be in this area.

Great for the money.

This hotel satisfied all of our requirements for this visit. I will use it again under the same circumstances.
