Trip Type: Family Review 1 of 27Good Budget Hotel
Hawaii hotel rates are very expensive, so for the money we paid for, it was good enough. The room was clean, though the bathroom may need to be renovated. Just don't expect anything more than the basics.

Trip Type: Family Review 2 of 27Nice rooms very close to the sea
This hotel was a real discovery, perfect location both in terms of beach and nearby shopping facilities. The rooms were clean and cozy, the staff correct and the beach was so close we couldn't believe it.

Trip Type: Family Review 3 of 27Definitely a good bargain!
We are active people who wanted a clean inexpensive place to rest our heads after a long day of activities. Kauai Sands was perfect for us. The location on the east coast made day trips to the north and south coasts convenient. The beach that the hotel was on was perfect for boogie boarding, surfing, or just sitting. Our rooms were very clean - I liked the retro feel to the room. No restaurant at the hotel, but we really didn't need one right on the premises - the Coconut Marketplace is right next door. Rooms were quiet. We had cable TV for the evenings after we returned from our busy day out and about. There was coffee available in the morning (for $1.00). When we checked in, the lady at the front desk was very friendly and welcoming. My sister-in-law, however, had a bad experience with another front desk lady who was rude. I never saw that. Refrigerator in the room. Seriously - excellent deal for the money (but I was definitely not looking for a 5 star hotel experience). When on Kauai, be sure to try Banana Joe's Smoothie stand, and defitniely try Hawaiian Shave Ice Company (a man sells shave ice from his white van parked in front of a store in a plaza in Kapaa ... the best shave ice). Gorgeous gorgeous scenery. Be sure to go to the north coast early in the morning to avoid traffic and crowds. We were able to find parking easily at Ke'e Beach because of our early start. Snorkeling and scenery at Tunnels Beach was excellent. We did Captain Andy's zodiac raft adventure to the Napali Coast - highly recommend that. Nice visit to the Kauai Coffee Plantation. Oh! Anything on the menu containing kalua pork at Olympia restaurant in Kapaa was deeelicious!!! The gardens at Smith's Tropical Paradise were very nice (didn't do the luau). Wanted to try the fern grotto boat tour, but it was closed due to heavy rains from Tropical Depression Felicia. Hanalei Gourmet Cafe - excelent food. Nice atmosphere. We consciously chose to spend our money on activities and not on expensive

We arrived late and needed 2 rooms together. They upgraded us to kitchenette units since they were the only adjoining units. The units were very clean, large and comfortable.

Trip Type: Family Review 5 of 27Good location and staff; but you will get what you pay for.
Positives: Good central location on Kaui. About an hour to Waimea Canyon, 45 minutes to the Na Pali Coast, 15 minutes to Lihue. Staff was very friendly and nice. The front desk was able to get us an early check-in (11:30), so we didn't have to go explore the island with our luggage on the day we arrived on Kauai. Negatives: Beach area is close, but not great. This was to be expected because the better beaches on Kauai seemed to be on the north or south shores. While well maintained, the hotel needs to be renovated. The decor is from the 1970's. The beds were on par with another 2 star hotel we stayed at (which is to say they were OK). We stayed two nights (7/15-7/16) and considering the price paid, it was an OK deal. We knew that we would not be spending a lot of time in the hotel other than sleeping, so we chose to go somwhere cheap for these two nights. Two things soured my experience. The first was waking up to see a 4" lizard running across the walls of our room the morning we checked out. The second was that our maid unknowingly shut off the power to our fridge and ruined our food for one day.

hotel is getting worse judging from our last visit two years ago. Only reason to stay is cost and a good location.

The hotel was in an exellent location from the airport. Loved the ocean view. Nice clean room. Older hotel but, does age matter you are there to enjoy the island, culture etc., and we did. Would recommend this hotel to others.

Trip Type: Family Review 9 of 27Decent hotel for the price
This is an older hotel (think 1970's) but it was a great value for the price we paid. Great location right on the beach, two nice pools, well kept grounds. Only a couple of drawbacks...the onsight restaurant is closed and the rooms could use some updating but for the price you really can't beat it!

Trip Type: Family Review 14 of 27Stones throw away
Kauai Sands Hotel is literally a stones throw away from the ocean. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms quite spacious, though a bit musty. Maybe the proximity to the ocean is the reason or that it was a low season, so not a lot of other rooms open to allow the breeze. Even still, it's a beautiful hotel, well located for traveling, by car, all over the island; on a major route. The staff is really nice, though there's no free breakfast or coffee. Overall, a very nice place to stay. They have chairs, chaise lounge chairs, and tables on the beach for you to enjoy the ocean or take a swim. The pool is closed at night, so no night swimming. Well worth the money paid and would certainly stay there again.

Trip Type: Family Review 15 of 27A bit dated
We were thankful that we only stayed one night here. The room was old and dated and there were no amenities - coffee/tea or any drinks available The room was clean but not up to a standard for the price
