Small room

Room was clean, staff is freindly. That said, room and bathroom very small. You can walk to Soldier field and the museums. If you just want a place to crash and money is tight this will do. Step outside after dark and you will be instantly greeted by pan handlers, there is no doorman or visible security.

great for those going to museum campus

If you are looking to go to any of the museums at the museum campus this is a great location. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. Savory restaurant in the hotel was a good option with good food. Really enjoyed our stay.

Comfy room but noisy

Our room was small but very comfortable. Unfortunately I heard the 'L' all night long. In the morning the door appeared to thin as it banged each time another door opened and closed. I am thinking that perhaps the noise was due to the location of that particular room. I was somewhat disappointed but the price was right.

Convenient location and complimentary shuttle service

We had very nice service at check in. We mentioned we're getting married in a few weeks and were given a room with a view of Navy Pier on the top floor. The Essex is in a great location, walking distance to the museums and provided a complimentary shuttle to several places including the Hancock Tower, Navy Pier and Wrigley Building.

Essex is great for the price.

There were two train stops near the hotel, which makes it easy to get around. We had a view of the lake and park that was outstanding. Easy access to the Field museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Planetarium. There is a shuttle from the hotel to the museums in the morning. We like to do a lot of walking, so we were able to get around on foot, even to downtown or Navy Pier. We had a sitting room (w/pull out couch) and a separate bedroom. Very well maintained and attractive. The hotel restaurant was also good. Enjoy.

great view

We loved the huge windows facing Michigan Ave; we could see all the way to the lake and Navy Pier. The room was very elegant and comfortable, and the refrigerator was very convenient.

Small and outdated

The Essex suffers from the effects of history. A queen size bed takes up a large footprint of the available square footage in the room. No coffee pot and a very small european style bathroom make for a cramped room. The bed was very comfortable, staff was friendly and the proximaty to Grant Park was awesome

Pretty Good

The lobby could really stand to be updated, but the room was beautiful and the view was breath-taking. Our room faced the lake and we were able to see the sunrise over it in the morning. The pool is in a greenhouse off the 4th floor. There is also a patio with tables and lounge chairs. It's really quite nice for the price. Located across the street from Grant Park and within walking distance to the museums and shopping, it was the perfect weekend getaway spot.

Best kept secret

Excellent view of Grant Park and lakefront fireworks. The rooftop pool and garden are fantastic! Close to many south Loop attractions. Comfy bed, nice decor, although the room and bathroom were very small.

pleasantly surprised

we live an hour outside of chicago and thought about spending some time in the city. we wanted something close to the theater and grant park. we sound it in the essex. the roof top pool overlooked the park and was quite pleasant. we got there three hours before check in and let us check in. we had a bike with us and were able to lock it in the connecting garage. perfect for a quick getaway.

great and convenient place to stay

I would recommend this hotel. For the price, it is in a really great neighborhood, not far from several great tourist attractions and is within a few minutes walking distance of millenium park and the art institute of chicago, two of the best attractions i saw.
