Trip Type: Family Review 2 of 11We had a blast!!
Friendly hotel with superb beach access and very comfortable beds. Large bathroom was a great asset in a beach environment in which you are changing and showering more than average. Location is great with hotel on narrow point of Outerbanks, so the property straddles both the sound and the ocean. The property's less exclusive restaurant was very reasonably priced (especially for kids) and very high quality. We usually save money on food when traveling by avoiding hotel restaurants, but with their pricing structure we were able to enjoy the convenience of hotel dining.

Trip Type: Family Review 3 of 11Great resort for the money, but not much going on in the off-season.
We were there in early April. Many shops and restaurants were opening in a week or two. "Lighthouse" is a great restaurant on the property.

Trip Type: Family Review 6 of 11I wish I could spend the whole summer at the resort!
PROS: Spacious rooms with a refrigerator, lock box, large bathrooms with granite counter tops, table with two chairs, cable TV. Fruit (a few whole apples), regular coffee, decaf coffee, newspapers, and hot water are provided in each building. A huge outdoor pool, kiddy pool, indoor pool, and other great entertainment options. Lovely beach with small crabs to entertain you. The resort provides towels, chairs, and umbrellas. Many nice shopping areas close by. CONS: Expensive. The free breakfast is the coffee and fruit mentioned. My family and I went looking for the free continental breakfast only to find that it was just the hot drinks. Plus, only a few pieces of fruit are put out, so you ave to be quick to get one. My family ended up paying for breakfast at the local casual restaurant.

Trip Type: Family Review 8 of 11Best Hotel in the Outer Banks
We've stayed many places in the Outer Banks and Duck and the Sanderling is by far the best for families. In the past we've stayed farther South and the hotels weren't even close to as nice, and we were surrounded by partying teenagers. I'm so glad last trip we decided to explore farther north. The sight of a cute small town with with families riding down little bike trails made me decide to stay there this time. Needless to say, I will be staying at this location all future trips. P.S. The crabs on the beach make quite a show.

Trip Type: Family Review 10 of 11Very nice hotel
My wife and I took our 9-month-old to the Sanderling for a long weekend, and a couple of family members came with us. After reading the reviews here and on TripAdvisor, we didn't expect an outstanding view, or earth-shattering service. Plus, we booked the two rooms here, so we sortof expected the worst two rooms in the place would be set aside for us. We were very pleasantly surprised that we were given adjoining rooms, and although they were on the small side, they were VERY comfortable, with great beds, bathrooms, and balconies facing the dunes (and the ocean was slightly visible, as we were on the second floor). FYI, the hotels.com "amenities" list with these rooms includes a sofa bed, but the rooms did not have them. The hotel gave us a rollaway when we found out, so head's-up if you are planning on a sofa bed. We ate at the Sanderling's less-fancy restaurant, and the food wasn't dirt cheap, but the tuna steaks and crab cakes were excellent. The Sanderling is in a great location, with great access to the beach, and again, our rooms (in the South Inn) were very, very nice and comfortable. All-in-all, we'd recommend the Sanderling as a good weekend escape spot, and we'd go back.

Trip Type: Family Review 11 of 11Great place to get away!
I stayed here before the renovations and was not happy. However, knowing they had just renovated the rooms I thought I'd give it a try. I was extremely satisfied with the results. The rooms are chic, clean, and this is a perfect place to get away to the beach in total comfort. I had a very mature 8 year-old with me, but would not recommend this place for children any younger. Great place for couples to get away for a romantic weekend.
