Trip Type: Family Review 1 of 23Cool hotel and neat staff
One of the bests breakfasts I ever had was in the hotel restaurant. They get very crowded in the AM, but make sure that Rodrigo is your server.

Trip Type: Family Review 3 of 23Great Location, Comfy Beds
Hotel was in the heart of the Gas Lamp District. Front desk was very friendly and named a few places to go, even made reservations for us. Bed was comfy. Room was clean. Elevators were the originals (1913) Kind of slow but very nostalgic..

This is by far the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

Trip Type: Family Review 5 of 23Good value, great location
Assuming you don't need a huge room (how much time do plan to be in there anyhow?), the St. James is a nice hotel in a great location.

This is an older (and historic) hotel with a lot of personality. It's character will appeal to you if you appreciate historic structures. Overall we enjoyed the hotel although the timing of our visit was flawed (more on that later in this post). Highs: roof top terrace with excellent views of the gaslamp quarter, old time elevators, excellent breakfasts at Brian's, great location within the area, to Balboa Park and to the freeway. Lows: smaller rooms, parking, limited staff knowledge of area restaurants and attractions, slowwwww elevators, no mention by staff that the annual St Patrick's Day celebration would include closing the street and that a bandstand would be set up in front of the hotel with bands playing from 4-12PM. I would stay their again if a price special was offered although never on St Patrick,s day.

Trip Type: Family Review 7 of 23Great location, but loud as heck
I suppose if you are staying in an "entertainment district" you should expect a fair bit of night time noise. This area is as if San Diego never heard of a noise ordinance after 2am. If this is what you are after, you'll be in the right spot...the hotel is smack dab in the middle of access to all kinds of things. Try staying on a lower floor that is accessible via stairs, because the manual elevator is slow. There is a bar/restaurant attached that is really convenient and not nearly as expensive as 5th street. A nice place all things considered.

Trip Type: Family Review 8 of 23great location easy walk most anywhere
We had mixed feelings about booking because of reviews about noise and hotel staff. However we had a wonderful stay the noise wasn't a problem for us. The hotel staff was absolutely wonderful to us during our stay. We will stay here next time we go to San Diego.

Trip Type: Family Review 9 of 23Comfortable and Convenient
Very comfortable beds, plenty of hot water with good pressure on the 6th floor. The feel is solid (concrete and steel beam) but nicely decorated with wood trim. Free wireless, very courteous and friendly staff. It was quiet although we had a low hum of fans somewhere outside. That might have been a plus as we never heard the local bars as cautioned elsewhere. Although the elevators add a historical element and feel secure, the interior metal accordion doors need work, as they squeak and will slam (or pinch) if you don't close carefully. Between the spring-loaded interior left-right sliding assembly and the standard-hinged exterior door with its own door closer, it can be a trick to roll bulky luggage out but you get the hang of it. We found inexpensive food nearby at the mall as well as many nearby restaurants in varying price ranges. It was an easy walk to the waterfront for the maritime museum (fascinating and worth the trip right there). Great view from the roof of this hotel day and night (closes at 11pm or midnight, depending on which side of the door you look at). There's a terrific large old "St James Hotel" written in light bulbs, which can make it real easy to find your way back. Would definitely stay there again because of the comfort and convenience.

Trip Type: Family Review 13 of 23great location, but hotel is old and has issues
The hotel has a great location, with many restaurants and stores very nearby. Room was small, and sink backed up dirty water. Bed and pillows were uncomfortable. They've tried to make lemonade out of a lemon, by promoting historical significance of an elevator that was once fastest in the world, but is very slow, very small, and uncomfortably hot.

If you are going to be doing things in the Gaslamp district this hotel is perfect. Although the room was very small, it was clean and comfortable.

Everything was pretty good. Although we did find that the hotel reused the soaps from the previous guests. Also the valet parking is $20 which I thought was steep but that's just me. All in all it's a nice hotel, lots of stuff to do within a few blocks of the hotel.
