Trip Type: Romance Review 1 of 76Perfect Location
This hotel is right where you need to be if you want to be able to walk to good food, and the San Diego night life. Plenty of bars and clubs are close; there is an above average restaurant connected to the hotel, and plenty more withing walking distance; the House of Blues is right down the street! Staff is friendly, and will help with recommendations of what to do, where to eat, and how to get there.

Trip Type: Romance Review 2 of 76Best value for location
I went on a trip to San Diego to see a Padres game, this was the cheapest hotel within half a mile of the stadium. I wasn't expecting to much for the price I paid, but it completely exceeded my expectations. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous, the employees were extremely nice and went well out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of. Highly recommend this hotel!

Valet service was slow and expensive. Great location. Can be a bit loud during the day but quiets down at night.

Trip Type: Romance Review 5 of 76A good place to stay
I found the rate of the ramada I could get trough hotels.com very convenient, considering the gaslamp area where it is located and the Hotel category (room and facilities). I couldn't find very helpful pesonnel instead, where valet parking tried to convince me that the very close parking (I spent 8 dollars for a day instead of the 20 I have been requested) ws not covenient. Breakfast in the restaurant was excessively expensive. but I really recommend the place for a good staying in S. Diego.

Trip Type: Romance Review 7 of 76Fun place to stay.
Great fun. Middle of Gas Lamp district. Close to ballpark and mall. Room was small but clean. Funky old elevators and rooftop were fun. Only negatives: Showering was an adventure. Water kept going from scalding to freezing and back again. Also no self parking. If you like cookie-cutter chain hotels this might not be for you.

Trip Type: Romance Review 9 of 76Outstanding and Unique!
My husband and I just absolutely loved this hotel. It had a lot of character and the view of the city on the rooftop was awesome. We plan on staying there in the near future.

What a great surprise. The St. James should be a landmark. I took my wife there for our 7 year anniversary. I had only seen the images and reviews online. We arrived to a very friendly attendant. I mentioned that it was our anniversary. He told to to call ahead next time so we could be upgraded. We went to our room. It wasn't much but I didn't expect much. Before we got settled we got a call to come back down to the lobby with our stuff. The same attendant upgraded us free of charge. We had to best room in the hotel for one night. It was amazing. The restaurant attached to the hotel is great as well. I will go back to this place again. To save time and money get the valet parking.

Trip Type: Romance Review 11 of 76Small rooms, comfortable and fun
The room itself was small, but it pretty much had all the bare essentials any hotel should have. The shower pressure was good, but again the shower was small. Our view had no view of, but the view from the roof was amazing. The elevator was not as bad as some of the other reviews make it sound. It's a piece of history and as such it does't move very fast, but it is not scary at all. Great location just a small walk away from a lot of fun places. Overall it was an awesome experience. ***note that parking is not included w/ the price of your room. It is $20 for a ll day and night.

Trip Type: Romance Review 12 of 76Great hotel but parking was a problem.
The Ramada Gaslamp in the historic St James hotel was great. The staff was outstanding. The hotel was nicely decorated retaining some of historic charm of the era the hotel was built. The elevators were original and although a little small, they were as fast as any other elevator. The rooms are small with comfortable beds and free HBO. Bottled water is available in the room at a very reasonable cost. The view from the roof is amazing and a must-see. Computers available for use on the second floor with WIFI throughout and internet cable (cat 5) connection (cat 5) available on the landing just above the lobby. Hotel is close to anywhere you want to go in the Gaslamp district. The Horton Plaza shopping mall is 3 blocks away. Clubs and bars on most corners and plenty of night life available. SeaWorld, the Zoo, Balboa Park and Seaport Village all within 10 minutes drive. Overall it was a great hotel. The restaurant/bar next door called Brian’s Bar and Grille was a nice surprise. Great service, good/plentiful food at a reasonable price and you don’t have to drive to get there. The only complaint I had was the valet parking. The cost was $20.00 per night which is reasonable considering the price of the room. The problem I had was that during the two nights (Thursday and Friday) that I stayed there, the parking was terrible. It seemed that valet was understaffed because there were always cars parked in the 3 white curb spaces in front of the hotel. This required circling the block to see if a spot opened up in front of the hotel. This was not so bad on Thursday, but Friday when all the clubs were overflowing and the streets were packed with cars it took 20 minutes to circle the block. If you stay at the Ramada Gaslamp, when you check in, ask the clerk what you should do if you cannot find a place to drop off your car for valet to park. It will save you a lot of time and aggravation later.

Old hotel with small clean rooms. Lots of character to the building and elevators. Great location for the Gas Lamp District

Great location and great breakfast next door. This is an old hotel so the rooms are small and simple. The elevator was the fastest when installed in 1913, but now it is just small and a pain so stay on the 1st floor. Valet parking is $20 a day so keep then in mind when comparing rates.
