Location. The Sarah Kendall House, overlooking the Narragansett Bay in Newport, R.I., is one-quarter mile from the galleries, restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues on Thames Street. This bed and breakfast is located in the historic Point neighborhood, and is positioned one mile from the Tennis Hall of Fame and two miles from Fort Adams State Park.

Features. This 1878 Victorian home features a front porch with wicker chairs and settees, and a harbor-view sitting room occupying a 50-foot tower. Full, complimentary breakfasts are served daily, including Eggs Benedict and Blueberry French Toast. Fresh-squeezed lemonade and tea are served on the porch, and crackers and cheese are available in the evenings. A business center offers fax and photocopy service, and a computer with complimentary wireless Internet access is available. The bed and breakfast is furnished with 18th- and 19th-century antiques and family heirlooms. A CD stereo, VCR, video library and board games are available.

Guestrooms. Guestrooms at the Sarah Kendall House feature period antiques and working fireplaces. All guestrooms offer private bathrooms with showers and bathrobes. Select rooms boast bathrooms with soaking tubs. Flat-screen televisions with cable channels are included. Guestrooms offer views of the harbor, manicured gardens or the historic mansion across the street. Beach bags, provided in all guestrooms, include towels and sunscreen.

Expert Tip. The 1748 Hunter House, located across the street from the Sarah Kendall House, was used as a Revolutionary War headquarters for Charles Louis d'Arsac, a French admiral. The house is furnished with pieces designed by Newport artisans Townsend and Goddard, and also showcases a painting by Gilbert Stuart, a well-known early-American portraitist. Seasonal tours of the home are provided for a fee.
