    We rented a two bedroom condo. The condo was very clean, and well maintained, though it was obvious that it hadn't been redecorated since the 80s or early 90s. The rooms were good sized and the beds were comfortable, though my husband wished he had brought his own pillow from home. I cooked all of our meals, and the kitchen was easy to work in. The kids enjoyed the pools, though we found we had to drive to them within the resort because they were pretty far from our condo for our small children to walk. The pools were heated, and it was pretty warm - in the 80s for a couple of the days in the last week of October, so we spent quite a bit of time swimming with the kids. A word of warning: It was about 7 miles to the nearest grocery store; the resort is pretty remote. We went to the Wild Animal Park which was beautiful, and probably about a 20 minute drive from Welks.

    Door lock was broken on arrival. Was not fixed correctly until day 2. Coffee table mildewed under the glass. Carpet worn and stained. This room needs an upgrade.

Location. The Welk Resort San Diego is located on 600 tree-lined acres in a picturesque valley in Escondido, Calif., 40 miles north of San Diego. The resort is positioned six miles from downtown Escondido in the North County Canyons, 20 miles inland from area beaches. A dozen wineries are within 15 miles of the property.

Hotel Features. This scenic resort offers indoor/outdoor dining at the Conyon Grill Restaurant, which serves American cuisine with mainstays including classic beef dishes, chicken, and seafood. The Welk Resort San Diego offers two 18-hole golf courses, seven spas, and a theater that features Broadway-style productions. A museum is housed in the resort as a tribute to its founder and namesake, Laurence Welk. The resort provides five outdoor pools and the water park features a 140-foot waterslide, interactive playground and a club house. Designated areas are available for motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and trailers.

Guestrooms. The one- and two-bedroom villas of the Welk Resort San Diego feature living areas, dining areas, and kitchens with refrigerators, microwave ovens, two-burner stoves, dishwashers, and coffeemakers with complimentary coffee. Dishes, utensils and cookware are provided. All of the 438 villas feature cable television with VCRs. Patios and balconies offer views of the golf course, canyons or outdoor pools. Some villas have washers and dryers. High-speed Internet access is complimentary.

Expert Tip. Family-friendly activities such as exercise classes, movie nights, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts and dance lessons. Bus tours of Hollywood, Rosarito Beach and other locations are also available.
