Howard Johnson All Suites Hotel
Great place to stay. Clean and simple - had everything a Westerner woudl want in a foreign land. My toilet was running a lot of the night - but it didn't really bother me. The room was actually excellent in quality and cleanliness. It was very oversized too which made it comfortable....More

Rosedale Hotel and Suites Guangzhou
We stayed 16 nights at the Rosedale, which claims to be the best mid-priced hotel in town. The Executive Deluxe Room was clean, comfortable and very nice. The staff was prompt and courteous, and they seemed to understand English. I called upon them everyday to bring ice to my room. We also enjoyed the swimming pool. During the mornings, after 8am, we could hear some construction going on. Overall, it was a very good value. However, on the first day they claimed not to have the Executive Deluxe Room available, so they put us in a standard room with dirty carpets on the smoking floor. We had to insist the next day on changing out the room.
The hotel is not in the best tourist location. It was not within eyesight of, or even a short walk from, the Pearl River as I had believed. But the hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the nearest Metro subway station, which is the easiest and cheapest way to get around town. 2 stations away at Haizhu Square, you can walk along the shoreline of the Pearl River. Farther away, we took the Metro to the US Consulate, which is near the East Guangzhou Railway Station. For only 8 yuan each, it took only 1 hour to get there by foot and subway from the hotel. It is also easy to just take taxis, and the fare starts at 10 yuan.
There are some shops and a McDonald's adjacent to the hotel on one side. And there is a 7-Eleven on the other side. I purchased a handy tourist map at the 7-Eleven. The Hunan House restaurant on the 2nd floor of the hotel was not to my liking. Chinese people like bone and fat in their cuisine, unlike us spoiled Americans. I like Guangdong style Chinese food the best. The best restaurant that I enjoyed was the Hao Cai, which is between the 7-Eleven and the hotel. The Moon Carol Cafe, upstairs from McDonald's, is also nice. Outside, just past the McDonald's, there are a couple of Chinese fast food sit-down places. And there are a couple of nice restaurants across the street. On the other side of t...More

The hotel was very nice and the food was very good especially the breakfast. The hotel was a few kilometers away from Nanjing road and other sites so you had to take a taxi instead of like other hotels which would be walking distance....More
