Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino
I prepaid the Hotel room for 1 week and had verified via e-mail that the room needed to have 2 beds because my young son wanted to stay with us. The rest of my kids were with their uncle in a house. When I went to check in, the front desk clerk said that there was nothing available and that I was lucky to get a room. (?) I was given a lousy room in a separate building, with one bed, in a quasi-abandoned floor with no elevator to that floor. (The view was nothing more than buildings, damaged by the 1994 hurricane!) My wife and I were truly angry and disappointed so I went to speak to a manager. She answered that the room "was still a part of the hotel", to which I answered: "so is the kitchen and the linen closet; do you want me to sleep there??"..LOL Upon seeing my outrage, she immediately offered a regular room with 2 beds in the main building. That's what I expected from a SONESTA. Aside from that check-in snafu, the stay was great but it makes me weary of prepaying next time, because if that other room had not been available, I would have immediately left the hotel and gone somewhere else. They fixed the problem but this should not have happened!...More

    Captain Olivers Resort
We stayed for one week at Captain Oliver's and were very pleased. Although most of the hotel staff spoke French and little English, most things went smoothly. They even extended the length of our stay by one day without charge because our airline cancelled the flight. Room was large and clean, with a great view of the bay. The hotel, and the area in general were very quiet with no disturbances. The pool was also well maintained, although in order to get towels, one must sign a refundable deposit slip of $25 per towel. The restaurant was excellent; rather expensive but well worth it. Included breakfast was good and satisfying, but was the exact same everyday. The hotel has three bars, of which the Dinghy Dock is by far the best with a fun staff. There were very few drawbacks to Captain Oliver's. Most significantly, there is no accessible beach within walking distance. One must take a car or ask for the shuttle to Dawn Beach, which is only a 3 minute drive, but still inconvenient. Also, while the secluded nature of the hotel is for the most part a positive thing, it is a little frustrating to drive 20 minutes to Philipsburg or to eat somewhere other than the hotel restaurant. Altogether a great experience, and we will definitely stay at Captain Oliver's again....More
