    We weren't sure what to expect, so the hotel worked fine for a long holiday weekend for a couple of friends. The Hotel is directly on the beach and the main road in front of the beach which has a lot of interesting foot and cycle traffic. We had no problems getting to any of the other sites in Rio from here. The hotel front desk staff was very helpful and was able to arrange transportation to anywhere we wnated to go and give us relevant information. They also arranged a late checkout for us on our last day when we had a late flight out of Rio. The room was unremarkable and relatively small but clean, fine if you only wnat to use it for sleeping. The breakfast was included and was a nice buffet. We had heard about safety concerns in Rio but did not have them at theis hotel.

Location. Located across the boulevard from the internationally famous Copacabana Beach, the Windsor Excelsior Hotel offers accommodations within five kilometers of the Ipanema Beach. This hotel lies within a five-kilometer radius of Sugar Loaf and the natural exhibits at Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Seven kilometers away, guests can board the funicular that ascends Corcovado, the site of the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Hotel Features. The hotel's Excelsior restaurant is noted for its opulent buffets and complimentary guest breakfast buffet. International fare with Brazilian flourishes accent the restaurant's views of Avenida Atlantica, while the Rooftop Bar serves poolside snacks and drinks until early evening. A softly lit lobby leads to the hotel's staffed business center where four workstations with wired and wireless high-speed Internet access await business needs, along with a printer, copier and fax machine. The hotel houses a barraca (beach shack) that contains complimentary towels, umbrellas and lounge chairs for use on Copacabana Beach. The fitness center has cardiovascular machines, free weights, a sauna and steam room. Complimentary shuttle service is provided from the hotel to downtown and to both airports.

Guestrooms. The 15-story Windsor Excelsior Hotel has 233 guestrooms. All offer cable television, minibars, desks, safes and voltage converters. Multi-line telephones include dial-up Internet access and voice mail. Bathrooms feature telephones and lighted magnifying mirrors. Windows open to views of the beach, mountains or surrounding architectures.

Expert Tip. Cardeal Arcoverde Metrô station is three blocks from the hotel. By subway, travelers can arrive to Botafogo within five minutes and Glória within 10 minutes, thus avoiding Rio's notorious traffic.
