Positives: Just about everything. The staff is top notch: Not only are they everywhere, but they anticipate (try looking confused in the lobby for one moment, a couple of staffers will materialize, asking if you need any help). The rooms are plush, with great beds and linens, original art, showers built big enough for two with rain showerheads, etc. The rooms are quiet (you don't hear plumbing or noise from other hotel guests). There are nice extras, such as free bottled water in your room. The lobby is grand. Grant Grill serves very nice cocktails. The hotel's location is great - you can shop across street at Horton Plaza and walk to the waterfront hiking paths. Negatives: No free coffee or free Internet. Parking is expensive.

Excellent hotel, gorgeous lobby, friendly and helpful staff. The room was classicly appointed, and the bed was so plush and comfortable, it was difficult to get going in the morning. I booked a great rate through hotels.com; so much so, that by the time we completed our stay and checked out, I was both surprised and pleased at what a great deal I had secured, and the value I'd received. On future trips to San Diego, there is no doubt that the US Grant will be my first choice.

Location. THE US GRANT hotel stands amid the vibrant atmosphere of downtown San Diego, Calif. This property faces the Horton Plaza retail and entertainment complex and is located two blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter.

Hotel Features. Constructed in 1910, this luxury hotel completed a $56 million renovation in 2006. The lobby features gray-veined white Italian Carrara marble floors, Deniece Duscheone hand-milled carpets, hand-carved ceilings and polished mahogany woodwork. Columns are gilded with 24-karat white gold. Specially commissioned American Indian artwork is exhibited throughout the hotel. The Grant Grill serves California Native Regional cuisine, and houses a full bar. The restaurant hosts live piano or jazz entertainment on scheduled days. A total of 30,000 square feet of architecturally distinct function space accommodates events. The Spa Velia Experience at THE US GRANT offers in-room massage services via personal Spa Sensiere who assist in the selection of one of Spa Velias' three custom-blended aromatherapy oils. A 24-hour, complimentary fitness center contains cardiovascular equipment.

Guestrooms. THE US GRANT offers 270 richly detailed guestrooms with original American Indian artworks, crown molding and custom-crafted furnishings. Entryways feature African walnut wood floors. Light filters through silk sheer window treatments, while blackout draperies are woven of cashmere and wool. Beds are dressed with pillowtop mattresses, white-on-white bedding, 300-thread count Frette Italian linens and commissioned one-of-a-kind French headboards. Bathrooms are clad in marble and most feature glass-enclosed showers only. All bathrooms include granite vanities, white-stone basins, and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Rooms include high-speed Internet access for a fee, and 32-inch flat-panel televisions.

Expert Tip. Originally built by Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. as a tribute to his father, the hotel is now owned by the Sycuan tribe. The hotel predominately reflects deep hues of blue and brown that represent the sacred elements of Sky and Earth.
