We went mid-week and were ABSOLUTELY Delighted. Wonderful staff - hotel and restaurant. Comfortable bed, quite surrounding and quaint hotel. Fireplaces in cozy sitting areas, with classical music piped through. ONLY area for improvement would be the bath tissue...

Location. Along a stretch of costal North Carolina's outer banks, where grassy dunes meet ocean-washed sands, The Sanderling Resort charms romantic vacationers and weekenders on retreat. The resort offers a location on pristine natural beaches, well-preserved and separated from the mainland by Currituck Sound. The neighboring village of Duck is home to more than 50 wild horses and a few hundred peaceful people. Fifteen miles south along the bank, the township of Kitty Hawk commemorates the birth of flight with the Wright Brother's Museum.

Hotel Features. Three two-story inns comprise The Sanderling Resort. The Main Inn, constructed in classic Outer Bank architecture, sets the tone for the resort, anchored by a Grand Gallery filled with light and warm natural wood finishes. The mezzanine level provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and overlooks the resort's reception area. The Main Inn's public areas offer wireless Internet access. Guests may make complimentary use of the on-site fitness center and indoor pool in the South Inn. Licensed spa technicians deliver indulgent massage and skin treatments at the resort's full-service spa.

Dining opportunities at The Sanderling are unique and plentiful. Sanderling Resort's formal dining room, The Left Bank, serves fine French-inspired American cuisine against the spectacular backdrop of the Currituck Sound sunset. The Lifesaving Station Restaurant, a restored 1899 water rescue station, serves fresh local seafood and wine amidst the casual throwback surroundings of nautical artifacts. Alternatively, the Swan Bar and Lounge makes a friendly venue for spirits and a snack.

Guestrooms. Accommodations at the Sanderling Resort were designed to appeal to adults, though well-behaved children are certainly welcome. All guestrooms feature high-definition flat screen televisions and wireless Internet access. Décor is contemporary and bright, with wood-trimmed blinds that open to the breeze. Splashes of oceanic color splash the sand-hued walls.

Expert Tip. On peak-season weekends, the bridges and ferries to the outer bank may be congested. Several inexpensive charter flights run from Norfolk to the Pine Island airstrip, only three miles north of The Sanderling Resort.
