Terrific hotel--little gripes

The room itself was very large and luxurious but the bathroom was quite small for two women traveling together, also we were booked into an outside room and were put into an inside one

Staff is mechanical

The staff at check-in did not give us the exterior room that we had specifically paid more $ for. We did not discover this until we arrived at our room. They did switch us but with no acknowledgement of their oversight, etc. In general, the staff here is mechanical, not thoughtful, and lack customer service training.

Old and tired

The Fairmont maybe historic but it simply feels old and tired.

Goods & Bads

Good because of its central location to al sightseeing activities - easy to go in any direction. Bad because of no local coffee shops/inexpensive restaurants and need to walk or cab to any shopping. All services (concierge, doormen, etc)were very good. We did not eat in the hotel. Classic old hotel but very well maintained.

Great Hotel and Location for the money

The hotel is beautiful, the diningroom grand. There was a beautiful view from the garden terrace at night. The staff were all very curtious and friendly. Our room was very nice, thought the bathroom would be a little bigger? Sunday Brunch in the Laurel Court Restaurant was great. Tonga Room had dancing and great atmosphere at night. Caffe Cento for a quick breakfast on the Powell St. side of the building. Easy access to the cable car going north/south and east/west (California St). It's a classic!!

needs improvement

I stayed at the San Jose Fairmont and it was a great experience. People were friendly and outgoing. San Francisco Fairmont lacked that, The bell man was not very friendly and my room was missing its robes and the Mp3 was not working. the condition of the room wasn't what I expected after staying at the San Jose Fairmont. The San Jose Fairmont is much better. Also I ate dinner in their restaurant and the food was overpriced with a limited menu. My espresso was cold and the waiter could barely speak English. No one seemed to really care about the customers much.

Internet Access

Internet access is not complimentary...this seems ridiculous as you are able to stay at a Motel 6 nowadays with free Internet. When paying the large fee for access, it does not work in the room and you have to sit in the lobby with all of the background noise. In every other way this hotel is outstanding. Time to join the 21st Century.
