The Essex Inn

Location. Located in the historic district of Tappahannock, Va., The Essex Inn is positioned across the street from the St. Margaret's School for girls. A historic walking tour of the village, whose name means "town on the rise and fall of water," starts on the doorstep of The Essex Inn. Within two blocks are many antique stores and several restaurants. Tappahannock River Cruises are located one-quarter mile from the inn.

Features. Built in 1850, this Greek Revival inn features 20-foot ceilings, original wide plank floors and a chandelier in every room on the main floor. Complimentary three- course breakfasts are served each morning in the dining room. The Butler's Pantry, which includes a beer tap, refrigerator, microwave oven and snacks, is open to guests 24 hours a day. Complimentary wireless Internet is included. The inn's dining room can also function as a meeting space. Two common areas are available, offering books, board games, a baby grand piano and a fireplace. A screened-in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation venues and smoking facilities. In-room massages are available by appointment.

Guestrooms. The Essex Inn offers eight individually decorated guest accommodations in the main house. Guestrooms include cable television. Private bathrooms are offered in all rooms, and are stocked with oversized bath towels and bathrobes. Custom-made four-poster beds and gas fireplaces or woodstoves are featured in all units.

Expert Tip. The Essex Inn once served as Union headquarters during the Civil War.
