Trip Type: Special Event Review 1 of 59Gorgeous Wedding at THE place to stay in Tamarindo
I could not have imagined a better place to get married! Tamarindo is the most traveler-friendly of the Costa Rican beach towns, and El Diria is the most upscale, convenient and beautiful hotel in Tamarindo proper. The scenery is gorgeous, the room options are diverse, the pools are fantastic, the included buffet breakfasts are an awesome little luxury. The size and layout of the hotel are also particularly conducive to a wedding, with a centrally located bar and poolside hangout areas as well as plenty of space for a couple to be on their own if they choose. As for the wedding itself, the beachfront ceremony was stunning, the cocktail area's wrought-iron tables are out of a Hitchcock film, and the food was better than at any wedding I've ever been to. The service at the hotel in general is a little inconsistent; however, the front desk folks are mostly lovely, the food manager was the loveliest, most accommodating man. And I was relieved to note that people were not at all in our face about rules and such: our guests staying in other hotels were allowed to lounge by the pool with us, we could park our car in reception during a lengthy loading period, etc. The highlights: - impressively well-laid out hotel - spacious, deep, picturesque pools - yummy, affordable food available poolside - beachfront location (with surf out front for the boys) The drawbacks: - The rooms and drinks can be a little pricey, but they did offer online specials during the end of low season. - They nickel-and-dime you a bit, even charging for wireless internet access! - I'm also sad to report that my mom had 100 euro swiped from her bag room when their stuff was packed and in their room before they left, but I don't think that hazard is unique to El Diria, or even Tamarindo. Use safes. I'm partial to family-run boutique hotels, so the rugged traveler in me feels a little guilty for loving such a resort-y place, but it really is that wonderful.

Trip Type: Family Review 3 of 59Best Location in Tamarindo
The room was great. We were on a ground floor with an ocean view. It doesn't get any better than that. The breakfast buffet is beyond your fondest dream. It has absolutely everything you can imagine for breakfast. The grounds, the swimming pools, the resteraunts, the bar and the staff are world class. The location in the center of town and on the beach can't be beat. I have only two criticizims. They charge a $15 one time fee for internet service. That seemed beyound cheesy for such a classy place. Also the maid seemed unable or unwilling to keep us stocked with towels, wash cloths and toiletries. You never knew from day to day what you would end up with. In there defense when you pointed out that you were shorted an item it was quickly and happly furnished. The pool towels are excellent and the tracking system for them is excellent also.

Trip Type: Romance Review 4 of 59Great Location, SoSo Service
The hotel is the best located hotel in Tamarindo. You walk out of your room and see the ocean surrounded by the hotel's lovely landscaping. The two problems I had with this hotel were (1)the service and (2) the food. The staff is not rude, but they aren't overly helpful. The woman working at the tourist desk gave us the run around on booking a bus. I found a bone in my chicken quesadillas. Despite my problems with the hotel, I would stay there again. There aren't better options in Tamarindo. You go to Tamarindo for the beach and the hotel is in the best location. Maybe more pressure would encourage them to make better phone and encourage their staff to be more friendly!
Hotel Response
"Thank you for the comments about your recent stay with us. We are always eager to upgrade our service, and it's important to hear about your problem with that one meal so we can address the issue here. Fortunately you were able to enjoy many other meals, as well as the rest of your stay with us. And we are pleased that would be returning to our hotel again."

Trip Type: Romance Review 5 of 59Great Hotel
My husband and I loved it. The hotel and staff were great. The room was great for the money. We had a Ocean, Sunset and Pool view. The free buffet breakfast was good. The location undeniably the best. We did not need a vehicle. Everything from bars, disco, restaurants, shopping was all walking distance. I would highly recommend.

Trip Type: Romance Review 6 of 59Room with a Spectacular View
The Diria Beach and Golf Resort was an excellent hotel. We had a gorgeous ocean view from our balcony. The hotel's location (right on the beach) is excellent for enjoying an early morning swim in the Pacific and the pool was fantastic. It's clear the staff works very hard to keep the hotel in pristine condition. The only complaint we had were the beds were a little hard and the pillows were very flat, but that seemed to be a theme throughout Costa Rica, even in the nicest of hotels.

Trip Type: Family Review 7 of 59Excellent beach bargain
Great bargain during offseason with excellent beach resort amenities. Beautiful location with excellent service. Recommendec for relaxing beach stay. Food and restaurants are very good. Good place to learn how to surf. Convenient to Liberia airport with good raod access. Tours or car rentals are conveniently available. Rooms are somewhat narrow with full size beds not quite suited for tall customers. Shower and no bath in the bathroom. Hotel had low occupancy at this time and may become noisy when full. Surrounding neighborhood is safe in daytime but is questionable at night due to pandlers and possible pickpockets.

Trip Type: Family Review 9 of 59Great location
Perfect location right on beach, nice pool, great staff providing tour info/bookings, nice bar, great breakfast buffet drawback was I got more mosquito bites sleeping in the room than staying out all day. I think they crack the windows in the bathrooms that lets mosquitos in. Golf course is not by the hotel (a little misleading to say Golf Resort in my opinion)

Trip Type: Special Event Review 11 of 59Good Value
Our stay was excellent, except for the service received for food and beverages. Food and beverage service was very infrequent, but great when received. We found that slow service received at Diria was consistent with service received at other venues in Tamarindo. Hotels.com rate was much lower than if booked through hotel. Savings of $40/night.

THIS HOTEL LOOKS GREAT IN THE OUTSIDE, BUT WE ALMOST MISS THE HOTEL. THE ENTRANCE YOU HAVE CAR COMING IN AND OUT AND IT'S SO SMALL. THEN WHEN I CHECK IN I NOTICE THERE WAS NO IRON, THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD PUT ME ON THE LIST....I NEVER GOT THE IRON. SO THE SECOND DAY.....THE CLEANING LADY COMES IN FORGETS TO CLEAN MY GLASSES OR ADD NEW ONES. THE HOTEL RUNS OUT OF TOWELS...WHAT HOTELS RUNS OUT THE BATH TOWELS.....WE HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY TO GET BATH TOWELS,THEY WANTED US TO USE THE POOL TOWELS. I EVEN SPOKE TO THE MANAGER ABOUT THE TOWELS AND THE IRON I ASKED FOR ON THE FIRST DAY.....NOTHING!!!!!THE QUALTITY OF THE SERVICE IN THIS HOTEL....TO ME IS A 0!!!!!!!!

Trip Type: Family Review 13 of 59Good Hotel with SO SO Service
WE enjoyed the hotel, the room and the grounds very much; just do not expect quick service. They have a very ho hum attitude about service. Not very friendly or quick but everything else exceeded our expectations.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 14 of 59Can't beat location
Loved: location. Ocean-front room close to bar, restaurant, beach, etc. Fantastic view, even from room. Free breakfasts were good, restaurant and even bar food was good too. Hated: Sounded like critters wrestling in the ceiling space and walls, day and night. Didn't really want to think about what it was! I'd go back anyway, it was that pretty.

Trip Type: Romance Review 15 of 59"Needs Improvement"
The hotel is beautiful; however, the airstrip we landed at, which is the hotel's property, did not have a shuttle to meet us, which I confirmed they would do earlier that morning. They sent a taxi, which later charged us $10 for a 3 kilometer ride. The driver did not know I spoke Spanish when I heard them raise the price from $10 to $15 in about 30 seconds time. When telling the staff I wanted to talk to the manager about it, the price dropped back down to $10. The pool was dirty, probably because people come straight from the beach and do not wash of the salt water or sand before entering the pool. Also, there were smashed bug remnants on our room's walls. There were a lot of mosquitos in the room, and finally, to top it off, we asked for a courtesy wake up call because we had an early morning flight to catch. That call never came and I was lucky to have woken up on my own. The property and location is beautiful, but the service was far below substandard and it seems like they are only interested in making a buck.
Hotel Response
Unfortunately, the local taxis from the Tamarindo Airport are independent operators and are not part of the Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort staff. Any unscrupulous behavior is solely their own. We are sorry to hear that you did not like your room, and we would have been very happy to have made a change for you, if you had given a call to the Front Desk. Thank you for making us aware of the situation at the Front Desk, in regards to the Wake Up Call. We are always looking for ways to improve our services.
