When they tell you that your room is overlooking a "garden courtyard" or "terrace," do not be fooled ---there may be a shrub or two in a courtyard waaaay down below, but the huge wall springing up from that courtyard (which apparently is the outdoor pool wall/foundation) is all you see.....rooms are cheaply done with fake wood flooring. If Madonna was spottted staying there, it must be that they have some fancy schmancy room designed just for her.....

Location. The modern hillside St George Lycabettus Hotel is set among the trees of Lycabettus Hill in Athens, Greece. Located in the Kolonaki shopping district, the hotel is just two kilometres from the Acropolis and Omonia Square.

Hotel Features. A uniformed doorman ushers guests through sliding doors into the pine-floored lobby of the St George Lycabettus Hotel, dotted with leather armchairs and vases of fresh flowers.

The St George Lycabettus Hotel's Le Grand Balcon serves up gourmet dishes like grilled fillet of beef charolais with mushroom risotto. Guests can enjoy the twinkling night-time views from the simple white dining room or dine on the large terrace area in summer. The Frame bar and restaurant offers lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, coffee and snacks. It's decorated in retro seventies-style oranges and browns, with plenty of chrome, Perspex and animal skin. In the summer Frame also occupies a marquee in the gardens across the road.

There are three large conference rooms on site for up to 500 people. The hotel has a business centre, with two computers offering high-speed Internet access.

The hotel's rooftop swimming pool is lined with canvas deckchairs and has city views and a pool bar. The Zen-styled Sensia Spa offers shiatsu massage, chromatotherapy and body and face treatments with Kenzo products. The onsite fitness centre comes equipped with a personal trainer. The Afternoon Boutique sells designer clothes and there's a hair salon on site.

Guestrooms. The 153 air-conditioned guestrooms are all individually decorated in a contemporary style, with floor-to-ceiling windows and marble bathrooms. Rooms feature satellite television, CD players, minibars and high-speed Internet access (surcharge).

Expert Tip. The pretty St George church and the open-air theatre atop Lycabettus Hill can be reached by a funicular railway, just a short walk from the hotel.
