Trip Type: Business Review 1 of 405Historic Hotel on San Diego's Gaslight Strip
Less expensive than the big guys with loads more charm. Smaller rooms are no problem for one or two people. Rooftop view is outstanding. Slight distance from Gaslight Stripe (one block) is a major advantage. Staff are super polite, responsive and informative. The attached restaurant is a great value for good food at a good price and way more than one can eat. Loved their breakfasts and lunch salads.

Trip Type: Business Review 2 of 405Good value, good location
Quaint, older hotel with elevators from 1913. Front desk personnel were very helpful, connected 24 hr restaurant was a good value, complimentary shuttle to airport, complimentary internet worked well all the time. Only place where I've had to initial a statement that location in an entertainment district could be noisy, but noise was not a problem. Walking distance (7 to 8 blocks) to convention center, baseball stadium, and numerous restaurants/bars in the area. Room with 1 double bed was quite small but not a problem as I was traveling alone.

Trip Type: Romance Review 3 of 405Perfect Location
This hotel is right where you need to be if you want to be able to walk to good food, and the San Diego night life. Plenty of bars and clubs are close; there is an above average restaurant connected to the hotel, and plenty more withing walking distance; the House of Blues is right down the street! Staff is friendly, and will help with recommendations of what to do, where to eat, and how to get there.

Trip Type: Business Review 4 of 405Wonderful Historic Hotel
Loved the 1913 elevator with the old iron door pull. The location was right in the middle of the Gaslamp District, with tons of restaurants, movies, bars, shops, and quick walk to light rail. I could even walk to Balboa Park. Our room was small and not luxurious, but fine for the money. And there was a great gym nearby which was free with the hotel stay. We loved our time at the St. James! The staff went out of their way to be helpful.

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 5 of 405Great for a quick stay
We had a one night stay and the experience was great. The staff was more than accomodating and very responsive. The rooms are sweet. It is a vintage type of hotel but the character is great. The elevator is cool but really difficult when you have bags. It's all part of the ambiance though...worth a stay.

Trip Type: Business Review 6 of 405Clean room, nice restaurant
Even though the hotel has very thin walls and you can hear what's going on in the club at the corner, the room is nice and very clean, TV is OK. service excellent.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 8 of 405Nice but expensive
For the price my wife and I felt it was not a good deal. The rooms are tiny and not very comfortable. The security at the hotel was questionable as well. In the middle of the night another guest was shouting profanely as loud as he could threatening another guest and the desk attendant took forever to call police and send security up to the room. We did not feel that they put a priority on the safety of their guests. However we were there for a wedding reception on the roof and that was lovely. There was a great view and great food.

Trip Type: With Friends Review 9 of 405OMG!!
They make you sign a paper that states in so many words that "this hotel is located in a party district and that you may experience some after hours noise". That was an understatement. Yes it is a party area and yes you get a little noise from the bars down below but it's the partygoers who have had too much to drink going to thier room that you haveto worry about. I guess a few guests had alittle too much to drink and got into an arguement on our floor a couple of doors down and started threatening eachother in a very graffic and disturbing way. I think I would pay a little more and stay a little further outside the gaslamp district.

Trip Type: Business Review 11 of 405So bad we had to leave
Some of the staff were great, while others had to be asked for help and then looked annoyed. The pillows were so lumpy they should have been replaced decades ago. The room smelled awful and the carpet was sticky. Then there was the elevator experience... There was barely enough room in it for three people, and you need to have two free hands in order to get into and out of it. This is definitely not a place to bring small children. It was by far our worst hotel experience ever.

Trip Type: Business Review 12 of 405Great Historic Hotel
This was a great historic hotel located in the middle of the Gaslamp District. Good location if you need to be in Downtown San Diego. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Our only two complaints were 1) there is very little parking downtown which means you end up paying the $20/night parking fee that the hotel charges -- a bit steep for parking but not uncommon in a downtown area; and 2) the noise from the nightclub/restaurant next door was very loud and since the hotel is old, the walls are pretty thin. If you need a quiet place to sleep, this isn't the hotel for you.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 13 of 405Dirty, but convenient
Great room to split for 2 couples, since it's basically 2 adjoining bedrooms w/ in room sink in each one.. However, there were finger prints on the mirrors, the AC unit in the wall started making weird banging/clinking sounds at 7AM, and the drains for in room sinks were also making weird noises. The clock radio did not work properly, kept turning on and off on its own. On the upside - hotel service was great. The Valet guy was nice, but not always at the front door. Had to circle around the block when I first got there twice before the Valet guy came out to park the car...

Fastest Elevators in the world - in 1913 - good value, great staff, moderate hotel - walking distance to the convention center...
