    Like other Israel lodgings, the rooms are somewhat smaller than we're accustomed for similar prices and levels in the U.S. but comfortable. The staff, while doing their job, are less "hospitality oriented" than in U.S. (more brusque). Also Israel hotels have an annoying policy of pool/lounging area only open in limited hours -- some open it only 9-5, others open it only after 5. The location was great -- near the beach and near town center. Food in Israel, even for a (non-kosher) Jew like myself is not great with the notable exception of the buffet breakfast which here, as in other Israel hotels, was terrific.

Location. The modern high-rise Metropolitan Hotel is located in downtown Tel Aviv, one block from the Tel Aviv promenade and the Mediterranean Sea. Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) is 26 kilometres from the hotel, an approximate driving time of 30 minutes.

Hotel Features. There is an out door swimming pool with an adjoining sun terrace offering sea views and the hotel has its own sauna. Multilingual staff at the 24-hour front desk can offer currency exchange and there is also a dedicated concierge desk offering a range of services including tour assistance. Complimentary wireless Internet is available. There is a private synagogue on the premises suitable for Bar Mitzvahs and other ceremonies.

The Metropolitan Hotel's Metro Café is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving local and international dishes in a contemporary setting. The Lobby Bar offers snacks, light meals and pastries.

Guestrooms. The 228 guestrooms over 16 floors have light decor, modern furnishings and fitted carpets. All are equipped with satellite television with pay movies, direct-dial phones with voicemail and dial- up Internet connections. Other amenities include air conditioning, clock radios and hair dryers. Guestrooms are wheelchair accessible.

Expert Tip. The Azrieli Observatory, located on the 49th floor of Israel's tallest building, offers stunning views and has a café.
