    Best possible location in Freiburg for walking to all major attractions including restaurants and city shopping. Don't miss the morning farmers market at the Munster. Accomodations are modest but clean and adequate, fine for the very resonable price. I was nearly as confortable here as I was at the $400 a night le Meridien in Stuttgart, though the level of luxury is appropriately less. One very important problem - for some reason, the smoking rooms do not have internet access. That made me mad, but the place is fine otherwise.

    The Mercure (downtown) is a great hotel for exploring Freiburg. Be warned, there are two Mercures in Freiburg, one in the middle of town and one outside town. This is the one near the cathedral (Munster). Clean hotel, very helpful staff, and a great location. Close proximity to the train station, Munster, University, and restuarants and squares (all within 10 minutes walking). Its geared more towards the business traveler so expect a more business "cut" to the room and common areas. We would stay there again, without hesitation.
