Le Meridien exceeded my expectations with its sophisticated yet comfortable property in the heart of the city. Planning for a long-weekend getaway, I was shocked to find a nightly rate not high above the two- and three-star hotels near kitschy Fisherman's Warf. Fearing the worst, my cynicism was proven wrong throughout my stay. The hotel, two blocks from the Transamerica Building and a quick walk to the Embarcadero and lower Nob Hill, managed to pull off the oft-disastrous balancing act between understated elegance and West Coast trendiness. We were quickly checked in despite arriving an hour early and found our room, despite our low rate, to be both spacious and refreshed. Our bay view was truly stunning, and the room not even icy-cold, as seems to be the norm arrival. The room was also particularly quiet. The only complaint was with Starwood Hotels' policy of pay-to-use Internet. Coming up on the 2010s, a fee Web services seems dated even for lesser hotels. (I wound up using the free Wi-Fi signal from the hotel across the block.) The front desk allowed for a 2 p.m. checkout and the concierge was knowledgeable and helpful in restaurant reservations (and guiding us away from a crowded guidebook favorite). Having stayed at the property when it was a Park Hyatt, I can say Le Meridien has truly raised the bar.
