The new section of the hotel is very nice, the room was large and comfortable.

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 2 of 37Historical Hotel
The Santo Tomas was the home of a coffee baron from several decades ago. It has been fixed up & is a nice little gem. The immediate neighborhood is not good, but in close walking distance to the heart of the city. It has a European character to the hotel & the food is good in the restaurant & the service of the staff was very helpful in helping make tour arrangements & providing guidance.

From the moment we checked in, my wife and I were impressed. The rooms are huge and tastefully decorated. This is by far the best value we have encountered through our travels so far, which has included; Jamaica, Bahamas, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Hawaii, Aruba, St. Thomas, South Africa and more. We have finally found a location and hotel that suits our needs. If this hotel is not on hotels.com we will still stay there. The remainder of our vacation time this year will be spent in San Jose Costa Rica. Our choice hotel is Santo Tomas and we are eager to return in November for two weeks.

Trip Type: Business Review 5 of 37Excellent Hotel Incredible Value
This hotel has been recently renovated and is exceptional. The hotel is owned by an American that is very involved and welcomed me to the hotel. The internet connection was fast and precise. I was incredible pleased. A few areas of improvement would be to have air-conditioners in the room. It was very hot during the day but very comfortable during the night. There was not a closet to hang closes but the owner said they were being made. It is located in a bad part of town and did not feel comfortable walking to/from the hotel at night. But taxi's are EVERYWHERE! I will definetly stay at this hotel again and again at the same price.

Trip Type: Romance Review 6 of 37Fantastic hotel and very helpful staff
I've read quite a few reviews of this hotel and believe that the owners have been done a disservice. While it is true that they are still in the middle of a rather extensive construction effort, my stay was very comfortable and the service was impeccable. The staff aided me in several personal requests to help make our stay more enjoyable and they were always quite friendly. The new rooms are a great bargain, with high ceilings, new televisions and nice furniture. Everything was perfect. I will be returning in just a few weeks and will be staying at the Santo Tomas again. Pura vida!!

Trip Type: Not Provided Review 7 of 37Wait until construction is over!
Both Hotels.com and the hotel should have more accurately explained just how significant the construction was and the potential impact on our stay. It is an adorable hotel with potential for a compfortable stay if one did not have to walk around ladders on the lawn which was at a slant. they offered internet access. Not sure about walking around the neighborhood as a tourist when we were there because we only stayed for one night. The bed was uncomfortable. Staff were very nice.

beautiful, creaky mahogany floors and 14 ft ceilings characterize this old house. Attentive service people. Dinner in restaurant was surprising due to elegance of the garde manger presentation.

Trip Type: Family Review 9 of 37Don't believe the nasty reviews
My husband and I stayed at the Santo Tomas for two nights last week and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, the neighborhood can be a little sketchy in the evening, but what big city neighborhood isn't? We were never confronted by anyone or had any bad experiences while staying here. The owner is wonderful, will give you some great tips on places to go to eat, people watch and some tours as well. There was some massive construction going on while we were there, so sleeping in late was definitely not an option, but we knew that when we made the reservation. The restaurant at the hotel was incredible! I highly recommend the octopus. I have never had octopus before and I have a feeling that I am now spoiled. The room was neat and tidy. Only complaint would be that the pillows were not comfortable enough and should probably be replaced. Great shower with plenty of hot water. All-in-all, it was a wonderful way to start our vacation! Thank you to everyone at the hotel that made our stay great!

Great hotel... in the future. Staff is outstanding helpful and friendly. Pool was unacessible and the banging noise not conducive to rest. I would definetely return because this place deserves a second chance.

Trip Type: Business Review 11 of 37Very pleased
We stayed at this quaint hotel when we had some business to attend to in downtown San Jose. The staff was FABULOUS! The food in the restaurant was great, with great prices. The hotel was under renovation, the owner's vision for it's completion will truly make it an oasis. The surrounding neighborhood is typical downtown Latin America, busy and thriving, with some interesting architecture but not someplace you should be out in after dark. There is a number of conveniences close by, coffee shop, market, etc. My only complaint was the mattress was uncomfortable, but I understand the interior rooms are getting re done as well. Overall, if you understand what to expect in downtown San Jose, this hotel is a great option at a great price!

Trip Type: With Friends Review 13 of 37Nice place...
Just needed a place to crash in San Jose after flying in on the way to the beach. Staff was friendly and helpful. Neighborhood felt maybe a little sketch, but wasn't bothered by anyone in the area. Good alternative to Mango in Abuela if you want to be in San Jose!

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 14 of 37Great room for the money
Hotel is in a nice older building - room was comfortable with a hot shower.... The hotel has a nice pool on site - basic exercise room - overall very happy with it. If we were to stay in San Jose again, I would not hesitate to stay at Hotel Santo Tomas.

This place is not The Ritz Carlton or the Drake, but it not a bad hotel. I consider cleanliness and the accommodations of the staff as the most important things when I choose a hotel. This hotel far exceeds all of those categories. The hotel staff goes out of their way to accommodate any of your needs as well as the housekeeping staff. The neighborhood is a little “Dicey” at night time; however cabs are plentiful and cheap which constantly come down the street where the hotel is located. The hotel is located close to downtown and a $20 US cab ride to the San Jose Airport. All of the front Desk staff speaks English. The Hotel was currently under renovation when I was there, but nothing was an inconvenience.
