Trip Type: Business Review 1 of 59Great hotel for the price!
The Hotel Occidental is relatively close to the convention center (about 20 minutes walk) and for its price, it is phenomenal. Its almost like a guesthouse of sorts, but was very clean. The shared bathrooms are usually not a problem - in one week, I was able to use it whenever I wanted except once. For anyone who does not want to spend extravagantly large sums of money to stay closer to other hotels near the Convention Center, this is a phenomenal hotel. I would be staying here again.

Trip Type: With Friends Review 2 of 59Great for the single, budgeted traveler
The reason I say "single" is due to the full sized bed. I avoid anything less that a queen sized when traveling with my husband. But, I was traveling alone this time and was pleasantly surprised by this wonderful hotel. I felt safe (takes a room key to get into the main door) and pleased by the cleanliness of the shower across from my room and the bathrooms down the hall. The bus stop is near and the trolley is only a .5 mi walk. The continental breakfast was great with coffee, fresh fruit, cereal, bagels and various baked goods.

Trip Type: Business Review 5 of 59Fantastic Property and Staff
I was very pleased with my stay at the Hotel Occidental. The best part of the property was the incredible staff as they were very knowledgeable and extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay their again and recommend it to anyone who wants a quality stay and a very friendly environment.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 6 of 59Pretty good over all
Personnels are polite and helpful, room is clean. Shared shower room and toilet is secure and clean, nice all-you-want-to-eat breakfast. The sound insulation is poor, so people speak in the hallway would make a big noise.

Trip Type: With Friends Review 7 of 59Satisfying
The rooms were small, but we expected that. The staff is very friendly and helpfull, internet acces and dvd-rental worked perfect! It was noisy in the evening, the planes are flying directly over the hotel till 10pm and early in the morning and the breakfast room is tiny. Just 2 tables and not enough space. It was good for the money, recommendable for a short stay and close to downtown. If you expect comfort and want to be in the hotel all day long, choose another one.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 8 of 59Almost Perfect...
Great location with easy walk into downtown/Gaslamp District or Balboa Park. Hotel had helpful printouts with restaurant suggestions. They even offer cruiser bikes with no rental fee! Coffee was great. Hotel just needs a hot tub on the roof and some protein (Greek yogurt perhaps) for the breakfast! Would definitely stay again.

Trip Type: Business Review 9 of 59Excellent Hotel
The hotel is very good, very clean, and safe. The service is great. The room with its own shower and bathroom was excellent and very comfortable. I will recommond it to my friends. If I visit San Diego again, I will definetly reserve a room at the same hotel.

Trip Type: Special Event Review 10 of 59not worth the money
We stayed 3 nights in this hotel and I have to say I was dissapointed. I read the reviews and was prepared for a small room - it is tiny. We had the half-bathroom, which means you share a shower and have your own toilet. Every morning we hear doors slamming and the shower adjacent to our room running starting about 6. It was the squeakiest bed I've ever had plus airplane noise (common in San Diego with the airport location) but lets just say relaxing sleeping in didn't happen. There are other, cheaper hotels where you know what you'll get even if they're not nice. Other than that, super friendly service and decent breakfast.

Trip Type: Not Provided Review 11 of 59dont believe the hype
a picture can tell a thousand lies... and boy does it ever! you get the feeling from the pics that you are going to stay in a cozy, yet hip, european hotel... what a croc, it's corporate leftovers at best. while some of the staff are friendly, others are less than. the tv is perched on the top corner of the room and is so small it looks like a security camera. the bathroom is clean but ugly as sin... can you say dorm room? and to top it all off they charged us extra to park our car in the lot... and while it might have mentioned this on the website, i have yet to see where.

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 12 of 59Unexpected
I was shocked to find out that this hotel room did not come with a private bathroom. It's my first time staying at a European style room, but for the low cost of the room, it was totally worth it. I'd stay there again.

Trip Type: Business Review 13 of 59Outstanding Budget Hotel
I stayed at Hotel Occidental in November, and was extremely pleased with my choice. My room (full bed with attached shower) was spotless, the staff went out of their way to be helpful (in calling cabs and giving directions). The continental breakfast was excellent and comprehensive. While the bicycles were available, I chose to rent my own with a few more speeds. It is an easy ride up to Balboa Park and downtown. The Gaslamp District is a 15 minute walk away, and you have easy access to bus lines going to/from downtown and Hillcrest. As noted in previous comments, the bed is a bit squeaky; but firm and comfortable. My windows faced onto 4th Avenue, but I had no problems with traffic noise and slept very soundly. My only complaint would be the lack of alarm clock.

We arrived late and received excellent service and a clean comfortable room. A great breakfast the next morning was an added benefit.

I enjoyed my stay tremendously! The staff was friendly and helpful, and the room, bathrooms and showers were spotless. The included breakfast was ample - good choices and delicious coffee. I could not ask for more! I would love to stay there again the next time I need a hotel in San Diego.
