We heard others call the Max a "boutique hotel." Its decor is interesting and different, very different from 90% of the hotels in which we have stayed. Its restaurant is good, the staff is accommodating and friendly, the comfort level is more than sufficient, the location is good for "downtown," and the price is good for the location. The supreme test is that my wife said she liked the hotel and would like to stay there again.

Location. The Hotel Max is located in downtown Seattle, Wash., near many of the city's shops, fine restaurants and renowned theaters. Pacific Place is located one block from the hotel. Pike Place Market is five blocks away.

Hotel Features. The Hotel Max was built in the 1920s by lumber magnate Joseph Vance, and was completely renovated in 2005. The lobby's red-lacquer and black décor sets an artistic tone for the guestroom hallways that double as photographic art galleries. The Red Fin restaurant serves Asian-fusion cuisine, sakes and creative cocktails. A 24-hour, complimentary business center houses two computer stations. Wireless Internet access is available in the lobby for a fee. The hotel's 24-hour, complimentary fitness room contains television-mounted cardiovascular machines and free weights.

Guestrooms. The 10-story Hotel Max offers 163 Denise Corso-designed guestrooms showcasing original artworks by local and regional artists and photographers. Slate-gray walls contrast with tomato-hued throw pillows and bed scarves. Beds feature pillowtop mattresses, pillow menus and down comforters. Bathrooms contain metal basin sinks, rainforest showerheads, marble floors and tomato-colored or neutral-toned wallpaper. Bathrooms are stocked with Aveda toiletries. Select rooms contain showers only. Rooms include wireless Internet access for a fee, and flat-screen televisions.

Expert Tip. Door-size black-and-white photographs, some of which unite through common themes, decorate every guestroom door of the hotel. A book titled the "Maximalist" is offered in each room and profiles the Northwest-based artists. The artists' contact numbers are listed in the book should guests wish to purchase works directly.

The minimum check-in age at this hotel is 21.
