Expert Tip. Matera, located 30 kilometres from Hotel Masseria Protomastro, is famous for its Old Town or Sassi de Mantera, consisting of primitive dwellings hewn directly from the rock. The town is also one of the earliest centres of Christianity and includes a historic 13th-century cathedral with a baroque interior. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
