Trip Type: Romance Review 2 of 38Do not stay here!
Yikes! After viewing the photos and reading some of the reviews, my husband and I thought this would be a great hotel to stay at. Luckily, we only had to be there to grab dinner and sleep because this place is just disgusting. The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms are horrible! There were bugs all over the wall in our room--right by our bed. Yuck! And, we thought we were the only people there for about the first hour (such a creepy feeling!) until we ran into two other couples at dinner. I'm wondering how this hotel has gotten such good reviews...maybe those people visited during the prime season and not the rainy season? Regardless, I wouldn't stay there ever again.

This hotel was exceptionally clean. The service was excellent at the hotel and resturaunt. Although there was a slight language barrier, I would definately recommend this hotel to everyone!

Trip Type: Romance Review 4 of 38Great property, but needs a little love
We were pleasantly surprised by the property as it's beautiful. The lobby was awesome and the overall facility is very classy looking. The location was quiet and away from busy San Jose, but close enough to be a reasonable drive to the volcanoes, parks, scenic areas and town. Plenty of typical Costa Rica restaurants within a couple miles and the hotel restaurant was very nice. The down side was the whole place was in need of maintenance. It apparently has not been kept up for a couple years and was showing signs of wear. But overall I thought the value was very good. I felt we were staying at a 4 star facility for a 3 star price. So if you can overlook some broken tile work and worn sheets I would recommend the place.

Trip Type: Business Review 8 of 38great bargain
this is a great hotel if you have to stay in Alajuela. It has very good food, it is clean and comfortable. The room had AC and a safe and was very large. the pool was nice and the gym was fantastic. the TV had at least 10 stations in english and it also had a DVD player (bring DVDs). the staff was polite and accommodating. The only thing that was disappointing was the massage. it was not a bargain (for the quality i received) and the girl did not know how to give a massage. there are at least 2 girls that do massage there and one does not know how to massage. for an hour massage, she spent 30 minutes on ONE of my legs (while i was face down). her idea of massage was to put oil on my body and it had absolutely NO therapeutic effect at all. It was Christmas eve/Christmas day so i'm not sure if the hotel was using regular staff. my son also noted the same problem. however, my husband (who was paying the bill) said she did not do the same thing to him.

We arrived and had to hunt down someone to check us in because we didn't arrive until 10:00 pm. The restaurant was very expensive and didn't have a kids menu so finding something for them to eat was difficult. Our first morning we didn't have hot water for a shower so I asked the office about it and they said it's because the hotel is full and they run out. I asked what time did they think I should get up in the morning to get a hot shower and he said "One hour earlier" not knowing what time I had showered that morning. The typical Costa Rican "No se" attitude. But the nice thing is that if you do have children or want to visit the Zoo in Costa Rica it's right across the street.

It really is a beautiful hotel and grounds. We spent the day by the pool and really enjoyed it. Only one minor complaint: the room had the double beds next to each other. Very comfortable sleeping, but I'd rather be in a king or even queen bed with my wife.... Zoo Ave across the street is a must see. Also, there's a great soda just down the street for lunch with the Ticos.

Trip Type: Family Review 15 of 38Great Value in Costa Rica
Our stay at Hotel Martino was very nice. The rooms were very nice for the price. The pool was lovely, the spa was nice and the we enjoyed the food at the restaurant. The grounds were a bit neglected compared to other hotels we saw, but again, the value was very good.
