"Unbelievable experience" The most unique place I ever stayed. I wish we had more time to stay there.

Hotel Features.Partially constructed from a former church, the Locanda is built from limestone and offers views over the Sassi Barisano. Multilingual staff can offer airport transfers (surcharge) 24 hours a day, there are high-speed Internet connections in public areas, and concierge services are offered. Other amenities include valet parking and a safe-deposit box at the 24-hour front desk.

Guestrooms. There are 28 guestrooms at Locanda di San Martino, built over four floors. Carefully renovated to reflect their origins as private homes, guestrooms have minibars, satellite television, climate control, wireless Internet access, refrigerators and hair dryers.

Expert Tip.The Sassi di Matera is a huge area constructed out of ancient buildings and excavated caves. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sassi has been massively restored into contemporary housing. Worthwhile places to visit within the Sassi are the Ridola National Archaeological Museum and the new Museum of Modern Art.
