Location. Originally a 17th-century inn constructed using local limestone, the recently renovated Hostellerie La Croix Blanche is a country house hotel located opposite the famous Fontevraud Abbey. It is 15 kilometres from Saumur and Chinon, amid the natural beauty of The Loire. Nantes Atlantique Airport is 60 kilometres away, with an approximate driving time of 60 minutes.

Hotel Features.Multilingual staff can offer tourist advice and assist with excursions in the surrounding area, including tours of Loire Valley châteaux and wineries. Bicycles can be rented from the hotel, and there is a bar, a swimming pool, a flower-surrounded courtyard terrace, and a gift shop selling regional products. Free secure parking is also offered.

The Hostellerie La Croix Blanche offers several fine dining options: Le Plantagenet is a smart restaurant with opening onto a large terrace. It specialises in fine local cuisine, with a large range of Loire Valley wines. The Bistro Fontaine d'Evraud is a rustic-styled restaurant offering French and international cuisine, and Crêperie Aliénor is a typical crêperie serving real French buckwheat crêpes and salads, overlooking the Abbey.

Guestrooms. The 23 guestrooms overlook the 17th-century courtyard, and feature antique or antique-effect decor and furnishings. All include direct-dial telephones, desks, hair dryers, complimentary toiletries, refrigerators, satellite television and complimentary Internet connections.

Expert Tip. Steeped in history and well worth a visit, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, just 15 metres from the hotel, is claimed to be the largest monastic building in Europe and is the burial ground of the Plantagenet kings. Among the remaining tombstone effigies are those of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart.
