Trip Type: Family Review 1 of 52nice but pricey
very clean and luxurious, but meals and services were over-priced, about twice that of US hotels.

Trip Type: Business Review 2 of 52Nice people, excellent property, poorly maintained
Spectacular property, great atrium layout, nice room decor, very pleasant and helpful staff. However, since my previous visit to this hotel a few years ago, its physical maintenance seems to have collapsed. My room air conditioner could not control temperature - probably because its inlet filter was conspicuously clogged. A water leak in the bathroom went un-fixed for a day. TV reception was intermittent. I did enjoy my stay. But it is a pity to see this neglect of a nice property.

Facility is clean and beautiful, most of teh staff were helpful and friendly. Many staff were overly eager to get us to attend a 90 minute sales pitch on the company's timeshare...

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 4 of 52Needs Improvement
We stayed at the Gran Melia on 6/19/09 & 6/27/09 - our first night was in tower #1 where only 1 room light worked. The room was below average and luckily I was only staying one night. on 6/27/09 we stayed again in the main tower #3 where is lobby is. Our room was 100% better and more updated and in working order as compared to our stay in tower 1. We had a beautiful balcony and view of the lagoon. It was like staying in two different hotels. The only bad thing about the main tower is any music that is going on in the lobby is projected in every room due to type of door. The music did go off around 10pm, but we were forced to listen to it until they turned if off.

Trip Type: Romance Review 5 of 52Great Hotel
My boyfriend and I stayed in the Royal Service part of the hotel and we were very happy for our full stay (5 days). It was very convenient to leave for different excursions and just as nice to stay at the resort all day. We will definitely recommend this hotel to others!

The resort was located just far enough from downtown but not to far from activities, eateries & shopping

Trip Type: Family Review 8 of 52Beautiful Hotel!
Great hotel, except food was marginal. Got room service a couple of times and ate by pool - not good. Also didn't like the "Welcoming" staff, who after telling us about the hotel then wanted us to come to a presentation about the hotel. Got stopped by them a couple of times the first couple days of the visit. But, would definitely stay there again!

Trip Type: Overnight Stay Review 9 of 52Nice hotel, minus the cockroaches
Maybe this is a normal occurrence in Cancun, but we saw the biggest cockroach I've ever seen in the lobby in the evening. Because of this we didn't eat in any of the restaurants and decided to forego the free breakfast as well. When we went to the market located on the lower level to find something to eat instead, there were gnats all over the food inside the refrigerated case. Needless to say, it was very disgusting. Overall the hotel was nice, but these incidents were pretty disturbing, especially when we told the management the next day and their response was that it wasn't the first time they had heard that.

Trip Type: Romance Review 12 of 52Excellent Value-Don't do the 45 min timeshare lecture!
This hotel was excellent, big, beautiful, well-maintained, great rooms, very good service. When you check in, they will ask you if you have ever been there before. If you say no, they will direct you to the concierge to tell you that "they will make you aquainted with the hotel". We were tired from the flight and just wanted to see our room, but the place was beautiful so we took the bait. BEWARE. Mostly they will try to offer you a free trip to Xel-Ha or a free massage, or something else, along with a free breakfast, and they will be vague about the details---mostly under the pretense that they want you to come back to the Hotel in the future. The NEXT day they will try to sell you a time share for a about an hour (seemed like the whole day). Im totally against the time share concept, and there were some amazingly beautiful properties, but we felt like the sell (including not leaving us alone when we first got there) took up way too much time of our precious 3 days there, and all it did was stress us out more trying to figure out how we could swing it! (We're from NYC and just wanted to lay in the sun and Veg). SO—the place is nice, but if you are not ready for a time share, when they ask you if you've been there before when you check in, say YES! And skip the concierge tour--you can always find out where everything is later--or just politely but firmly say you arent interested. Whew. Mayan riviera is beautiful, though, and we had a great time.

Trip Type: Family Review 13 of 52Great place in Cancun
This hotel was one of the only ones around that still had a beach. It was a wonderful place to stay. The children's area is great -still enough grown-up area around it so that both my children and the adults in the group really had a great time.

Trip Type: Not Provided Review 15 of 52Restaurants & Balcony
We had just come from 8 nights at El Cid where the food was incredibly bad. We were delighted with the 3 restaurants that we ate at during our stay at the Gran Melia. We also loved our private balcony with an absolutely beautiful ocean view. We found no faults in our hotel stay. While I can find no redeeming qualities about the city of Cancun the Gran Melia might bring us back.
